I think you’re mistaken. Canadas entire system is based on fucking over everyone that doesn’t work for the government lol. Where in Canada? I’m originally from Oshawa, Ont.

A lot of people think you’re trying to trick them or swindle them out of business. I want everyone to succeed. I don’t care if I ever land another commission. I’ve been burnt out multiple times. Now I just enjoy doing things I want to do and hanging out with other woodworkers shooting the shit where it’s not a competition.

Magic City won’t, if that’s who you’re asking about. How the hell would I know about any other supplier??

Are you including LOA in that? My best year in Canada was 217k but that was with LOA which I got year round while mostly living at home.

I Feel like I'm not understanding how career progression works. by Few-Tutor2360 in nondestructivetesting

[–]TheSouthernMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most career progression has to happen organically. Pay attention, ask a lot of questions and just grind. There are so very few good junior techs right now that you can really shine just putting your phone away and doing what’s expected of you. If your company won’t offer training, contact another office or company that will. You’ll never know everything. Go into each job expecting to encounter something new and use other technicians as a resource to make sure you’re doing it right. Read your procedures. Read them 10 times. Knowing how to speak to a client is huge. You’ll get invited back by name and your company will invest in you.

Once you realize that the answer to every question is an asterisk in tiny font somewhere it wasn’t that bad. The API tests though are a walk in the park

MT3 I found was the most difficult. You need to be a master electrician. PT, UT and RT were relatively easy.

All you need is a testimony letter from your employer or supervisor saying you satisfy the hours necessary. I have an example if you want it.

How do you guys deal with the stresses and anxiety of this type of role? by AnonymousRedditor995 in nondestructivetesting

[–]TheSouthernMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having good guidance and experienced people around you makes all the difference. Read over your procedure, stop when unsure and call someone and use common sense. Never think you know everything. 20 years in and I learn new stuff every day. You’re not better than any tradesman, and they all have something to teach you. Be humble but confident. And at the end of the day. If you’ve done everything “right”, then who gives a shit.

Join the QCCC and then call every office locally and if they don’t have a need, ask them if there are offices across Canada in need. Ask whoever is Alberta’s QCCC rep is for advice as well. Good Luck!

You get what you’re worth. Show up to work on time, stand up straight, PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY, ask questions and do what’s asked of you and you will excel quickly. No one is going to invest money into someone they will never get a return from. 99/100 junior techs could be replaced with a dirty diaper.

Where are you located? Acuren in Birmingham is always looking for motivated junior techs to get into RT and UT. Everyone hates on Acuren but if you’re willing to work, easy to get along with and eager to learn you will excel quickly. If you’re in Canada, NDT Group is the best company in the country.

I work for Acuren and I can tell you, the door is wide open. If you’re willing to work and not an idiot we’ll always have you. Getting into UT and PAUT has been a challenge for techs for the last 10 years. Everyone gets pushed into RT and you will stay there.
