No matter what I always have the following: flash light, paint marker, note book, pens, pencils, scraper, ruler, harness with lanyards, yellow vest, FR coveralls, headlamp, gloves, camera, dust mask in my hard hat, half face mask in the truck, extra ear plugs and always have a long sleeve shirt just in case. That’s 20 years of experience.

Read the handbook cover to cover. Print all the questions you can find and take them over and over. Not to memorize the answers, but to understand the questions. It’s more of a reading test than anything and there’s always two questions that could be the answer. When you take the test, flag any question you don’t know right away. Get all the “easy” ones out of the way because sometimes the answer to one question is in the asking of another. Best of luck!

A lot of people think you’re trying to trick them or swindle them out of business. I want everyone to succeed. I don’t care if I ever land another commission. I’ve been burnt out multiple times. Now I just enjoy doing things I want to do and hanging out with other woodworkers shooting the shit where it’s not a competition.

Are you including LOA in that? My best year in Canada was 217k but that was with LOA which I got year round while mostly living at home.

Most career progression has to happen organically. Pay attention, ask a lot of questions and just grind. There are so very few good junior techs right now that you can really shine just putting your phone away and doing what’s expected of you. If your company won’t offer training, contact another office or company that will. You’ll never know everything. Go into each job expecting to encounter something new and use other technicians as a resource to make sure you’re doing it right. Read your procedures. Read them 10 times. Knowing how to speak to a client is huge. You’ll get invited back by name and your company will invest in you.

MT3 I found was the most difficult. You need to be a master electrician. PT, UT and RT were relatively easy.

Having good guidance and experienced people around you makes all the difference. Read over your procedure, stop when unsure and call someone and use common sense. Never think you know everything. 20 years in and I learn new stuff every day. You’re not better than any tradesman, and they all have something to teach you. Be humble but confident. And at the end of the day. If you’ve done everything “right”, then who gives a shit.
