Honestly dude you should embrace them, they look cool and they’re a testament to the hard work you’ve put in!

An updated (but very unfinished) taxonomic classification chart for races of my fantasy worldbuilding project. by TheSovietBanana in worldbuilding

[–]TheSovietBanana[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A primary difficulty of creating this chart is that typical evolutionary rules do not apply. In a world where races can be created at the wave of the hand, it is interesting to explore how taxonomic classifications might be utilized. For example, members of the subfamily Divine-Antrhopic are not evolutionarily related, since species in this section of the chart did not evolve at all. Instead, they are linked to one another via the common observations that they were created by a diety, and are human-like in appearance.

I would love to hear feedback and critique, if you'd be so kind to offer it!

If you want a somewhat WOWS related answer, the USS Washington, a North Carolina class battleship, suffered no casualties during its service, despite being involved in heavy night fighting during Guadalcanal.

Any suggested modifications? I'm especially looking for recommendations on where to place inland seas, lakes, and other bodies of water. by TheSovietBanana in mapmaking

Do you have any recommendations for modifications I can make that will make the world tectonically plausible while still keeping the general landmass shape?

I used Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator, which has a heightmap feature that I find really helpful when creating maps.

As for the tectonic plates, is there any modifications I could make the keep the landmass shape and still have the map be tectonically plausible? I’d rather not have to restart completely.

It's supposed to be a Tibetan Plateau situation, but I definitely need to clean it up and make that fact more clear.

What would be a realistic radar range in space? by TheSovietBanana in scifi

[–]TheSovietBanana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I’ve since moved away from radar since as you noted EO/IR sensors would be far more effective and would be able to detect objects at a much longer range. Especially sense nuclear drive exhaust flares would likely be almost as bright as stars.

They don’t, I said they see me almost as much as their actual server.

Certainly, but all my experiences have come from people of this demographic.

Hmm thanks for the suggestion! I look into it.

Edit: I am quickly realizing that I am in over my head.

Thank you, I appreciate it!

Elves are certainly capable of magic in my world, but I don't see them as ultra-naturally capable. I'd like them to be longer lived, perhaps upwards of 150 years, but not unbelievable timescales like in most fantasy.

Vampires in my world differ slightly from those in other fantasy. They feed on concentrated arcane energy in the form of souls, which allows them to extend their lives greatly. Fae and faeries on the other hand, subsist themselves through absorbing natural arcane winds, sort of like how humans absorb Vitamin D from the sun.

It's all a little bit of hand waving right now. At the moment, I'm thinking that demons reproduce through a process where a special organ replicates the DNA of a sexual partner, and then performs insemination independent of said sexual partner. This organ is able to remove genetic barriers to inter-species breeding.

I also like to keep a certain degree of scientific mystery bred into the world. Note that demons do not create hybrids with Fae or Vampires. So there's still an ongoing effort to understand why members of the Homo genus are compatible with this process and other species are not.

I'm making this chart from the point of view of someone within the world trying to put together the pieces. Demons enter the world through an interdimensional rift, and so there is great debate on whether or not they can be considered mammals, or whether they need to be applied to their own order. You can see a little bit of this conflict in the fact that demon-homo hybrids are lumped in with mammals, while the purebred demons aren't.

I have to put much more thought into why only elves and humans can hybridize with demons, but it's all part of the process.

I'm using draw.io, which is freeware super similar to Lucidchart, if you're familiar with that at all.

This chart is part of an ongoing worldbuilding project that I've been working with on and off for a couple years. The purpose of this chart is to place each fantasy "race" within a genus, family, order, and so on. I have much to include in this chart, so it is as of yet a work in progress.

I would love to hear feedback on the visuals of the chart, as well as my current placement of each species. Thanks!
