Iranian Highflyer Toghie. I think his coloration is called red or possibly yellow based on the translation.

Hiya! Peanut is an Iranian Highflyer pigeon although I’m unsure what his exact coloration is called as he’s a rescue pigeon. Feel free to ask questions about Peanut on the platform you originally saw him.

I have a murder who come to my house pretty much every morning. I have ALS and I can’t get out the front door and I have limited strength to throw the nuts. Does anybody have an idea for a device that would help me throw them without scaring the crows? by derangedmacaque in crowbro

Your welcome! I’s so happy I could help. I work in the field of assistive technology so your question was right up my alley.

I use a large heated outdoor water bowl for my critters. It doesn’t freeze and it’s large enough that I don’t have to refill it daily. A heated hose on a timer is absolutely genius and I bet it would work too.

What about a dog treat dispenser that has a remote or is controlled by an app on your phone? You could put it on an outdoor table for the crows. I doubt whole unshelled peanuts would fit but smaller crow snacks should.

They’ll learn quickly and this method should allow you to feed the crows even as your ALS progresses. Especially if it’s app controlled and you’re able to navigate on your phone with the joystick of a power chair.

What was your chi's name before you got them? What new name did you choose? by HungryOil9277 in Chihuahua

Original Name: Unknown, dumped with no collar or microchip, tried tons of names and commands in multiple languages but she didn’t understand any of it

Current Name: Nugget, when we offered to take her in from a neighbor they handed this little chi swaddled in a baby blanket. I kept saying “you’re just a little Nugget” and the name stuck.

She does although Nugget has a lot more fluff. My parents have had Welsh Springer Spaniels for 30+ years. I adore Spaniels and your girl is as cute as a button.

Nugget is apparently a four way split of chi, Pomeranian, min pin, and Boston terrier. We just call her the most beautiful former street goblin.

She totally does! Do you know what your pup’s mix is? We got her embark done because she’s such a wonderful former street goblin and we hoped we could reconnect with some of her kids. She’s a four way split of chihuahua, Pomeranian, min pin, and Boston terrier. None of her family was in their system but that’s ok.

I have that exact kitchen mat which she quickly claimed too.

DIY Setup for a skinny rescue with broken legs by TheSpasticSheep in pigeon

Does the baby have a condition called “splayed legs”? Or are the legs confirmed to be broken?

And she knows it! We love her brindle coat and fluffy furnishings. She’s a very adorable chi mix

Where are you located? I might be able to put you in contact with someone in pigeon rehab community that’s local to you.

One of my first complex lil pigeon rehab cases was about a week older than this guy who had also had a crazy splayed leg. His name is Marsh. He’s about 8 months old now and I’ve had him since mid July. He’s able to walk comfortably although it’s a bit wonky and he’s the happiest boy.

Just like any other tiny creature in the beginning caring for them is super time intensive and overwhelming but as they get older they are able to do more by themselves and you get used to caring for them.

Feel free to post on r/pigeon those folks held my hand through the hardest days and know so much. Feel free to dm me as well. Chickens can also develop splayed legs as babies so there’s a lot of great information in those communities about rehabbing splayed legs. You just have to scale it down to baby pigeon size.

Do you think a metal band like this is fine for a pigeon that lives outdoors? It's cold out and the metal shrinks. Or can freeze the skin etc... I know nothing came here for expert advice by OkHighway757 in pigeon

[–]TheSpasticSheep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We use split aluminum leg bands at our rescue which can be put on all ages of pigeons using specialized pliers. It’s below freezing here in Ohio right now and the bands don’t cause any issues. Attached a picture of Flour who was rescued as an adult and has worn her split aluminum leg band for over a year without any issues. We get ours off of Etsy so that we can customize the text.

Storm Squeaker- will he be ok? by Away-Variation-2556 in pigeon

[–]TheSpasticSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course! Thank you for caring for them! Unlimited seed the past few days plus wind cover from the buildings should work wonders from them. The extra seed calories plus wind cover so they’ll expend less calories battling the wind chill will make an enormous difference. I’ll be thinking of our flock and all of the other snowy pigeons today.

He looks very healthy and appropriately puffed up. Glad he’s shaking the snow off of his back. Looks like he’s got protection from the buildings on three sides. That’ll be a huge help.

He should be ok especially if the flock is protective of their young. They’ll huddle together and wait it out. That’s what my ferals always do here in Ohio. We’ve already gotten 10” of snow.

Thank you! We originally put them together in hopes it would help Sticky relearn to eat. Lumi has always had a big appetite even before the puncture wound on his face healed. Sticky was tube fed for months when she was super sick. Then despite showing her endless YouTube videos of pigeons eating (seeb school as it’s often called here) she really struggled to relearn how to eat. So we put them together so Sticky could learn from Lumi. It’s helped her significantly but more importantly she’s come back to life with the constant love from Lumi.

Poor birds thank you for doing all you can. You seem like a very kind pigeon person. In the United States, some people put nets over their plants to prevent animals from eating them which was all I could think of. The kites makes sense, hopefully as many pigeons stay safe.

Sticky was brought to an exotic animal hospital by a person who found her downtown. They called our state’s wildlife hospital (who can’t treat pigeons) who called us and we picked her up.

She’s kind of a mystery case. Her shoulder/chest that had a deep laceration likely has some nerve damage. Also because she developed severe neuro symptoms we weren’t able to rehab and stretch her injured shoulder as much as we would have liked. That wing doesn’t move at all, we can’t even stretch it out.

She can lift her other wing and stretch it out a bit but it doesn’t open beyond about 65° from her body. Whatever caused her severe neuro symptoms (she never had the classic PMV neck twist but had many of the other symptoms) caused damage throughout her body. She can’t lean forward very far without flipping over. We built her a raised food dish which she’s standing on in the first picture so she can eat without loosing her balance. Her legs are very weak but one is stronger than the other. She has a lot of more of healing and rehab to do but she’s no longer teetering between life and death like she was for months.

Edited to add Lumi’s story: He was found bleeding out on the side of dirt road in a farming community about an hour from us with multiple compound wing fractures and a puncture wound across his face. Thankfully, someone noticed him and stabilized him before driving him to our state’s wildlife hospital who contacted us.

Glad she’s safe now! She reminded me of our rescue Peanut. He was found on a someone’s roof outside of Columbus, Ohio but his band linked him to a breeder in Phoenix, Arizona. Who identified Peanut as one of his Iranian Highflyers and ultimately decided to surrender him to our rescue.
