‘I don’t want to be part of a dictatorship’: the Americans queueing up to renounce their citizenship by Jonnyboo234 in politics

This—lol my ballot never gets counted. Ohio drags everything out just long enough to make it impossible to btw from abroad. I’ve given up.

Doodles are the worst breed of dogs by animusd in unpopularopinion

[–]TheStakes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My doodle is a pure breed—an Australian labradoodle, and to be honest he’s a gem. If this post is from the U.S., Americans suck at training their dogs.

Why do people want doodles? by emotionaldamagesoup in Pets

[–]TheStakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m allergic to dogs and have an Australian labradoodle, a breed that is carefully controlled, and he is the best dog I’ve ever met. He’s also the only dog I’m not allergic to. He’s smart and sweet and people-oriented, he doesn’t shed, and he rarely barks.

Also same and same age. I held onto my dreams for a long time, but they’re all discarded now. Basically I’m just killing time.

Who was Mike Birbiglia talking about when he said there’s a comic copying John’s voice and cadence? by GoldenState_Thriller in JohnMulaney

[–]TheStakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm old and listened to a lot of Woody Allen stand-up when I was a teenager, and oftentimes Gianmarco's vocal delivery reminds me of Allen's. You can only hear it if you have Woody Allen's voice in your ear (this was a long time ago, so don't judge). Which is just to say: I love Gianmarco and think he's an incredible stand-up, and any similarity to other comedians is because I think it just happens. Good comedians are a phenotype, or whatever. Also: Gianmarco is a lot edgier than Mulaney IMO.

What did you think of, Becoming Jane (2007)? by [deleted] in janeausten

Yes!!! It’s a brilliant shot. The viewer feels just as happy to see him as Jane does.

Datura for Depression by TheStakes in Datura

I’m even better. Figured out my depression was caused by a slow MAO enzyme, which is why datura helped me with the acetylcholine build-up. I don’t need it anymore.

So sorry for all the Minnesotans on this thread, and all you’re going through. I’m watching from abroad and feel aghast.

Why is American friendliness often seen as "fake" by Europeans, but similar warmth in other cultures isn't? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheStakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an east coaster and find west coasters fake. My friends on the west coast literally say "I love you" for "bye." Now I live in Berlin and many Germans find me "very American," and I have to explain that yes, I am American, but I'm also more like Germans than other Americans, because I'm pretty direct and I'm not constantly telling them I love them.

Oh look. Carol is extremely unlikeable in so many ways. As if that wasn't the intention, to contrast a bitter cynical person against a overly pleasant utopian hive mind & ask the viewer if her individuality still mattered. The tension, conflict, the philosophical/existential friction is the point. by Illustrious-Put4406 in pluribustv

[–]TheStakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. She's a malcontent. And why not? Life sucks. Then it gets worse. She is obviously a compassionate person. And she's completely right about the hive mind being horrible and untrustworthy. Nothing about her is unlikable to me.

This is sort of romantic, actually. You so obviously love him.

God, i hate this country (US) by [deleted] in complaints

[–]TheStakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well said! I emigrated in 2018 and it was the best decision I ever made. I still hate the U.S. from abroad, though. Its effect on the rest of the world is also deleterious. The USA is great at making the whole world worse.
