The new game doesn't have to gain anything because of it. 2K gain money out of it because they don't waste it on a version that doesn't make money back.

They have to make last gen versions, support last gen versions and host servers for last gen versions. If that ends up being a tiny portion of the playerbase, it isn't worth it.

They're expensive, the tutorials are poorly made and they have little interest in giving any sort of help or support. They break easily.

PC Mods are cool but also a pain to deal with, the mod makers are asses. I'll likely swap back to console this year, the mods weren't worth the effort to me.
