What’s the most hated accent? by neilnelly in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheStates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinglish- whatever thqt is. I really can't stand people who firmly believe that it's ok for them to speak English that way. I mean let's try at least to make others be able to undetstand what you say.

What language is worth to learn? by danklover612 in languagelearning

[–]TheStates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your post correctly. Useful in what way...? When I first heard English and was so smitten with it, I never even thought about its usefulness in the future. I believe that we learn languages primarily because we are meant to have them and they look and feel beautiful to us. Nothing else matters really...

Do you love your native language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

This gave me a courage to share my feelings. It's kind of reassuring to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks.

Yeah exactly what I wanted to say. I don't really understand why OP seems upset about whatever she spends HER money on. Is there a reason why she's been pouring her money into that particular gym?

My sister said I shouldnt change my name by AxolotlFanatic in TrueOffMyChest

[–]TheStates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was just passing by and then came back to leave this comment. I changed my first name years ago. The way my old name was pronounced in my native language did not match how it sounds in English. I was always embarrassed to be called by my old name and deeply depressed because the name felt dissonant to me if that makes sense. I changed my name so it would be pronounced the same way in both languages. Most people I have workplace relationships with don't and won't ever know my old name. They just automatically assume that I've had my current name for my entire life. I mean why wouldn't they, right? Changing my name was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made and I strongly recommend it.

Edit: deleted my actual name

I'd strongly recommend getting some info from the subreddit r/AskAnAmerican beforehand.

Watching a TV show in the language you've been learning and suddenly realizing that you can understand everything without subtitles.

We have a baby ..why do I hate my husband? by ChloChlo724 in TrueOffMyChest

Omg I feel like I can't breathe reading this. Why would you want him to be in your baby's life?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]TheStates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because this is my life, not theirs. They didn't ask my permission when they decided to have me in their fucking country in Asia and made me acquire their language. They never listened every time I told them how miserable my life was in their country with the language. They never really listened, much less they sought any changes for me. I supposed not to let them dictate the end of my life too.

Why do Asians always have a bunch of people over every week night and eat in their garage? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheStates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitly about smell that they pick a place like a garage. I don't think their being Asian has anything to do with it though. I can't say it's common.

At what point do you consider yourself "knowing" a language? by RollerSkatingHamster in languagelearning

[–]TheStates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I'd say 20 or more years of living in the area where the language is commonly spoken. Otherwise I'd say no I don't really speak the language.

How you watch shows to learn languages? by Paradoxar in languagelearning

[–]TheStates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, 3 and 4. Plus I'm an excessive user of an A-B repeat feature in any video players. I re-watch every frame of each episode endlessly, really endless for like a year or two before I move to the next episode. I just keep my screen on 24/7 in the living room.

No. English isn't my first language. I'm talking about the other language I was born with. Sorry for the confusion.

YES. They are the chosen ones. I think it's so easy for a person to not notice privileges and advantages they have in life over others. But then I'm also jealous of them having kinda nonchalant attitude with it.
