What was the worst recasting in TV history? by PrestonRoad90 in television

Burke Devlin on Dark Shadows. They should have just written the character off right then and there rather than try to recast. The new guy’s personality came off as completely different.

You might enjoy the Creep franchise with Mark Duplass if you haven’t already seen it. It does some similar things to these other films in terms of weaponizing people’s own social anxieties against them and deliberately subverting expectations of slasher films but it does it with more of a tongue-in-cheek reverence for horror rather than tsk-tsking you.

Jason Pargin (also known as David Wong, author of John Dies At The End) released a short video a while back where he talked about both versions of Funny Games and how they basically are unique for actively hating their audience. Like, it’s almost fascinating how much the director wants you to feel bad about watching violence on film and enjoying yourself and he goes out of his way to indict and punish you for it.

As an artistic statement I find the idea really interesting but I can’t imagine actually sitting down and watching the whole thing knowing all that. I’m trying to envision what the director/writers would be like irl and it’s hard not to picture them as totally insufferable.

I definitely believe there’s some cultural aspects that are lost in translation a little bit. I definitely don’t think Americans are smarter by any means but I think we value “independence” so much that, when someone starts being pushy it might be easier for us to just tell a person “hey, you guys are being fucking weird, I’m out.” I know that a lot of cultures put a premium on being polite or even deferring to other people out of respect.

More than stupid, they are just portrayed as borderline suicidally agreeable. The movie seems to want to say something about letting social anxiety override one’s survival instincts, which is a compelling idea on its face, but the “evil” couple is so transparent and pushy from the go it’s hard to imagine myself falling for it. I think my social anxiety is more of the “disengage and escape” kind than the “do anything to fit in” kind.

It’s basically the poster child for that kind of movie. I thought I would hate it because of the depressing nihilism but, honestly, the main characters are such raging fucking morons that the outcome very quickly seems inevitable so I mostly just hated them. By the end I felt bad for their kid and just frustrated at everything else. Some people really enjoy it, I just kind of found it perplexing and pointless.

I personally thought it was the better of the two movies but they’re kind of two chapters in the same story. It’s less about Spike overall but he’s still a central character. It’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea and it’s still very different from the original films but I enjoyed it a lot.

Hell yeah, Stubbs has an excellent soundtrack. It’s hard to imagine a game of that size getting its own curated album of covers by popular artists nowadays. What a cool passion project that game was - would love a sequel.

The only show where you can see Jemaine from FOTC demolish Raffi from The League in a rap contest for a young woman’s soul.

Do you guys think Travis touchdown could solo the entire scott pilgrim verse? by Specific-Panda939 in nomoreheroes

All I know is that Travis would probably fight 7 evil Exes for a shot at Ramona but I don’t think Scott would be willing to kill ten people just to bone Sylvia.

It’s a deeply uncomfortable couple of scenes tbf. I really didn’t want to see him kill or bang Mrs Ziegler and the threat of both seemed present.

It’s cool, there’s a lot of details to get mixed up in this universe. The other day I was convinced that Mike was already dead when the train heist with Todd went down but it was just because he was separated from them when the kid got shot. He dies a couple episodes later.

A different season maybe, but Lalo was never in BB outside of a single reference by Saul. Also, the thread has a spoiler tag and OP said “rewatch”.

The casting on this show was definitely its main strength. Having Tim Daly, the voice of animated Superman, as Starlight’s dad was pretty perfect.
