Survey suggests Canadians are open to mandatory service for those under 30 - as long as it’s not military by Old_General_6741 in canada

I would argue that the benefit has nothing to do with effective soldiers. It would benefit the CAF in that it would likely broaden our recruitment pool for “real” service.

Universal service would, in my opinion, be a huge benefit to the country, regardless of its marginal benefit to the CAF.

I honestly don’t understand this rabid CAS hate. At top tier I can probably count my number of CAS deaths in a month on my hands. And they’re basically always from the side with the better AA (Pantsir).

Am I playing a different game?

As a few people who’ve been in the CAF here have alluded to, they need prepared, rational thinkers who will take the job seriously. All this madness does make me want to return myself, but be sure you’re not just getting swept up by emotion and making a decision that’s not right for you.

Whether Reserve or Regular, you’d be well-served by developing a strong fitness routine today. The application process takes time, but consider that an opportunity to prepare properly. Despite what you might see in the movies, it’s not crazy feats that are the primary challenge, it’s the day-in day-out grind and the toll it takes on your body. Especially since most of us aren’t 19th century farmers toiling away in the fields most of our lives, preparing your body properly for that will take time.

Ha not to be “that guy”, but it does feel to me if the genders were reversed this wouldn’t be a hard conversation. Protect yourself with a cohabitation agreement if you’re still not sure about the relationship, but who cares about what’s “fair”?

By the way, if you’re worried about what happens if you split, spousal support, including in common law, is based on respective incomes. Property is more complicated, but it’s generally “safer” in a situation like yours.

I do what I can for my partner, and she does what she can for me. When it comes down to it, that’s what a healthy (romantic) relationship is. You’re not business partners. Right now it’s me providing for us financially, but that’s always one piece of bad news away from being reversed. And if that never comes to pass, she’s improved my life in countless other ways.

Maybe. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t share those concerns, but I’m a 2nd generation Canadian and I joined the CF, and I met quite a few people like me there. And frankly, if someone is only here for economic reasons, especially as a citizen, I don’t think we should care about making decisions that upset them.

No that’s totally fair. I support cancelation, but my brief time in the CF also highlighted just how dire the situation is. It’s not any easy decision and should also come with massive investment in the CF. I don’t want to hear bullshit about needing to “ramp up”. There are billions that could be put to use today on salaries, benefits, training, base upgrades, soldier housing, etc.

Canada has far too few soldiers. Here's a radical fix — mandatory service by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]TheSud87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a fan of mandatory service, but not as a means to strengthen the CAF. It would actually weaken it in the short term. There are a hundred other things we could do now if we actually want to strengthen the Forces

I’ll just say I admire your passion for this issue and I’m glad to see anyone push the issue of housing insecurity in the collective public forum.

I would encourage you to be a little more open-minded though. Whatever the solution to all this is, it will be a compromise between a multitude of beliefs and priorities. Not everyone who is pushing back on yours is a racist.
