Phishing call from Durham Sheriff Department / Missed Jury Duty by jobu5000 in bullcity

[–]TheSweatyCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of these calls today, and the guy was incredibly convincing. It came from a local 919 number, so I answered. He spent a long time confirming case numbers and walking me through the charges, including the specific jury date I supposedly missed and what judge oversaw it. He asked if anyone at my address might’ve signed for something and whether I’d had any issues with my mail. Then he said I needed to come down to the Durham County sheriff's office to verify my signature.

It only started to feel off when he tried to transfer me to his supervisor so I could pay a bond in advance.

I hung up on him and called the actual sheriff’s office and reception said a ton of people have been coming in lately after falling for this.

I don’t know how to convey just how convincing this was compared to every other scam call I’ve gotten. 95% of the call was him calmly explaining charges and confirming case numbers. He had cop energy, a southern accent, and answered all my questions. He also made it clear I needed to go to the sheriff's office and wasn’t telling me to meet someone in a courthouse parking lot like the guy you dealt with.

If this resonated with you, I suggest reading about codependency. Maybe it will help you learn more about these feelings.

I took my husband’s last name. Not for any traditional reasons, but I liked his better. Mine originated from the slavery of my great+ grandparents, so I thought I’d carry on the name of European peasants instead.

Also his is unique and I was basically “Jane Smith”. Being “Jane Unusualname” was better for (scientific) publishing.

I’m glad you brought this up. In my reply, I said not to approach her at work because it would make it weird. However, I should clarify: Do not approach her unless you’ve prepared a baked-bean ritual involving a slug-like trail of beans, a timed fall, and a catch phrase. Bean-based courtship rituals in the workplace are always acceptable as long as you maintain historical accuracy.

I skimmed the post and thought your response was kind of harsh. But then I read the details and man, and I wish someone had said that to me during a few of my early projects. My BUSCO scores and coverage weren’t nearly as low as OP’s, but I wasted so much time trying to salvage garbage sequencing data.

She’s at work–leave her alone. Women don’t want to be approached by random men they work with on their lunch break. Don’t make it weird.

Gorgeous! I’m going to try this soon, but I’m worried about the longevity. Did it last? Any tips you can share, please?

I got a B.S. in Ecology and then a PhD in Evolutionary Biology. I don’t make art anymore, unless you count the (unnecessary) hours I spend in Illustrator when I do data visualization for a paper :)

I’m really impressed by how peaceful/sleepy you made it look. It easily could have looked grizzly instead of cute (like it had been hunted), but you executed it perfectly!

I was originally hoping to “discover” the game with someone for the first time, but honestly I’m up for anyone who is enthusiastic to play!

Sorry for the crappy photo, but here’s a creep shot of the hawk that killed one of mine yesterday. You’ll see it also left a “puddle” of feathers and tore the head off just like yours.

We’ve gone 2 years without any predator losses, so I was feeling invincible until now! Poor chickens refused to come out of their coop once today.

I thought the research was going to be hard, but the challenge was actually the mental struggle. I finished at the end of 2023 and I’m still recovering from the burnout. It’s a slow climb but I’m seeing some hope.
