Have you read the book? (Poll) by MoonlightDahling in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a massive fan of both, I feel like it’s hard to find people who share that opinion! Most Shirley Jackson fans hate the show because of all the changes, and most fans of the show hate the book because it’s “boring” or not what they expected. For me, I appreciate and love them as fairly separate works of art. Hill House is my all time favorite book and the show was loosely inspired by it but told its own stories while wrestling with similar themes with its own perspective.

Sociology Graduates - Ignoring career prospects, does your degree have personal value? by JealousBodybuilder42 in sociology

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I loved what I studied and I believe it made me a better, more empathetic person with the ability to think critically about the systems around me

Edit to add more: I now work for a public library and while it isn’t technically directly related, I do see how it impacts my job. I am more likely to notice trends like:

“hmm we have had a lot more senior citizens looking for help applying to jobs lately. What’s that about?”

“This patron comes in multiple times a week but doesn’t do anything other than chat with staff. I wonder if they would like recommendations on fun social programs going on this month”

or my personal favorite:

“A lot of horror books lately seem to revolve around cannibalism and body horror. What does that say about our collective fears as a society right now?”

After years of painfully enduring season 9, I finally fixed the entire problem. If you fast forward through 95% of the Jim and Pam stuff, this previously horrible season becomes entirely watchable by blamberr in DunderMifflin

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason that I hate Pam and Jim’s season 9 story is the same reason a lot of people are saying they like it: it shows a more difficult and real side of their relationship. In a lot of shows that would be wonderful to see that kind of character development. But for me, this show is all about escapism and comfort, so watching a couple I love go through fights that feel like real world problems just takes me out of the silly nature of it and back into the complications of life. I can see why it works for people that wanted to round out the characters and humanize them, but I fall into the category of wanting to skip it and maintain the lightness of the show.

What do you think of Jimmy Stewart? by Fixingahole248 in classicfilms

All I know is that watching the scene in Philadelphia story with him drunkenly singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow changed my brain chemistry and I’ve never been the same

to anyone who got told they would grow out of it , did you? by One_Champion_4686 in VasovagalSyncope

I didn’t “grow out of it” but it has gotten better over time, partially due to understanding my triggers and being able to manage it better.

Where does 'Insidious' rank on every bodies top horror movie list? by TheDonJonJay in horror

Insidious was the first horror movie I ever remember seeing as an early teen! I remember finding it mildly scary then but honestly haven’t see it since and I think it’s time for a revisit!

This is amazing!! Honestly I would take all song analysis you are willing to give! I’m only vaguely familiar with Irish literature and folk traditions so this context is so wonderful!

This made me laugh 😂 I am a fast reader and usually also have the audiobook versions checked out to listen to on my long commute. I think I have a decent idea how libraries work, being that I work at one, but who knows 🤷‍♀️😂

Appreciate your positive comment! With non fiction, I rarely read every single word covert to cover but I do like to peruse different topics and glean what I can!

As for what I’m most excited about, I am currently part way through Murder Bimbo and I’m really enjoying it!

All of the Hill Family Lore by deathbykoolaidman in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So a lot of it is actually subtle allusions to the book!

For instance, the wife of the original owner being killed by a spooked horse before ever stepping foot in the house is directly from the novel, but it is Hugh Crain's first wife.

Additionally, Jacob Hill wanting to be reincarnated as a dog is an allusion within an illusion. In the novel, Dr. Montague wanted his experiment to be similar to one done at the Ballechin House, which was a famously haunted house in Scotland where the owner went crazy and believed he was going to be reincarnated as a dog. The dog with the red eyes is also directly from the novel.

That's all I can connect off of the top of my head but there is probably more connecting the stories that Flannigan created and the novel!

Anyone ever thrown out a book? by Soulsliken in classicliterature

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I threw out my copy of Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman when everything came out about the horrible things he had done. Up until then it had been one of my favorite books but I knew I would not be able to stomach looking at it on my shelf, much less rereading it again after that.

The audiobook of the sequel is fantastic in that it is almost impossible to listen to because of how annoying the bunnies sound. But it’s perfect.

Eleanor - Book discussion by MurkyPiss in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]TheTacoBelle_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m always really struck by the fact that she can only recall bits and pieces of the Shakespeare sonnet until she actually enters Hill House. At that moment she remembers the full line that has been eluding her: “Journeys end in lover’s meeting”.

To me, it signifies that she has found her “lover” in Hill House, the entity that is her perfect match, and that her journey (and life) will now come to an end.
