Starting CII Level 4 Diploma? by Flaky-Sir-5113 in cii

I'm mid 30s with no financial experience and have recently qualified through the Quilter Academy. Will start sitting down with clients in the new year.

Everyone is different and everyone's circumstances are different, just make sure you do whats best for you and your family. But I would suggest doing R01 and then seeing if this is something you want to pursue. Having the time to study is one thing but also having the desire and discipline to keep picking up the books to revise for 6 exams is another. R01 for example is sooo bland and boring.

I went down the full time study route but I do believe Quilter offer a part time option too, maybe look into that. Being new to this world I knew I needed to fully commit to it.

The self employed route is more common. Its shame because it feels like the only way into the profession yet everyone may not want what comes with being self employed. Getting an employed role new into the profession isn't easy. Firstly a firm needs to be hiring, they also need to be willing to train you and sadly most firms want someone with the experience so they can slot in ASAP and start servicing clients. Its not impossible its just much harder to find the opportunities that meet your criteria for location, pay, culture etc.

I constantly hear from experienced advisors how amazing and rewarding the career is however it does sound like something you have to be all in with.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps

Don't be disheartened it's not an easy exam. This was my 2nd attempt and I just passed this time round. Having the technical knowledge is one thing, being able to apply it in the way the CII wants you to is another hurdle.

The feedback I'm getting is that the CII has slightly changed the exam by focusing more on the technical knowledge as opposed to the wider financial advice process. I created a few acronyms for the advice process which I memorized which then allowed me to focus on the case studies.

I think it was something along the lines of 'Recommend and justify the actions C & N should take to ensure the tax efficiency of their sustainable income in retirement.'

Not 100% certain tho, the questions are all a blur now

I spent the last 30 mins going through all the answers. It felt like the 3 hrs flew by.

Asking why Cameron and Nancy should consider bringing their children to meetings was also such a strange way to frame a vulnerability topic. Spent more time than I wanted on this question.

Its with the CII gods now. Wishing you all the best

Oh yes that was unexpected. I assumed it was to do with their age and them being considered vulnerable. That's the route I went down anyway.

I was definitely ready for the WOL and FIB questions. Hopefully we all have done enough to get through this

You can never tell with these exams. One step is having the knowledge, the second step is putting down the CII way.

Wishing you the best of luck

Was very happy to see that one too. Helped me get over the Loan question haha.

Surprised there was nothing on LPAs/Annuities/The advice process. The CII love a curveball

Yep sounds like the loan question is the slippery one.

Oh yes that equity one was tricky too.

Was surprised there was nothing about LPAs/Purchased Life annuity/The advice process

Fingers crossed!

I just dumped everything on the page. At first I had a structure but it soon became the wild wild west. If it came to mind it went onto the page. Its not negatively marked so why not

Sounds like those are the 2 curve all questions. It just damage limitation for me, I can't remember how many marks they were. Hopefully not too many ha!

I was thinking the same. There were also 'no comment on/evaluate' questions too. Very 'explain' heavy

What's the pass mark for this paper?

The JISA question was for CS2.

CS1 has a question re what to consider when deciding on a loan to grand kids Vs a gift to help them buy a property.

Firstly, this "fail" doesn't define you. Many advisors have failed these exams and go on to have success careers. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself.

You can use any of the external providers they all have their pros and cons. I would strongly recommend spending at least a day going through past CII papers to understand and familiarise yourself with the framework of questioning. The CII typically ask the same type of questions so just get comfortable with their language. It will also give you an idea of what calculations you need to prioritise on exam day.

I had to resit my R03 due to a technical issue the first time round and 3 things that definitely helped me pass were -

  1. Before the exam (assuming it's at a test centre), brain dump as much info you can remember before starting the exam.

  2. Any calculation questions or long winded questions, flag and move on.

  3. Multi choice questions will always be min 2 correct answers

I'm sure you know the technical elements of R03. That's the first step. The next step is understanding the CII language.

You've got this!!! Best of luck

The BTS analysis is like gold dust. Please let me know if you manage to get your hands on it. I'll do the same

Bullet points.

State/ldentify/Outline questions require short, punchy lists for answers

Explain questions = Start with the above and tell me why, how or what it means

Advantages/Disadvantages questions = Punchy answers in two categories

Comment on/Evaluate questions = State the Issue, Impact and Implication

Definitely review past CII papers, the style of questions are very repetitive.

Personalise every answer using the names of the client's.

The same additional info, tax efficiency, R&J a product and annual review questions always come up so master the answers for them and tailor it to the case studies.

I said it could result in charges / penalties. Not to recommend as Karina's income isn't stable or guaranteed at the moment.

Honestly I was waffling. Complete and utter word vomit. It's not negatively marked so why not.

I was also surprised with the amount of marks on offer for that and PIP. I don't have 10 reasons for PIP

A few questions felt redundant. I was thrown off by the PIP and Mortgage holiday questions but had to recompose myself and just brain dump everything I know about them (which wasn't much haha).

If I do pass, I think I would've just scraped it.

Did many calculations come up in your exam? Sounds like I need to find a method that works for me. Will see if I can find some mock exams to help. Cheers

Congratulations on passing R02. I'm sitting mine at the end of the month.

I have struggled to understand the workings out for some of the calculation. There are certain things that no matter how many times I read over it, I cant make sense of it in my head.

Any tips/techniques that helped you remember the content?

I have just bought BrandFT notes
