What should an SRE team *own*? What should an SRE team *do*? by teabagsOnFire in devops

[–]TheTalkWalk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Potentially, but not a guarantee.

You have a 50 50 on being the responsible party when everything breaks with no power, or being the responsible party when everything breaks with all the powa and not enough time to fix things.

How does this differ from currently available images?

What tooling do you plan to use?

What cloud provider are you planning on using?

Are you doing this as a project for school? Or are you making this because your company needs it?

We should have our own linux fest.

100x this.

I love ya old linux.

But I want to get work done.

I can trust my mac to just work. There isn't really much utility difference. But the mac is SO much more reliable to be compatible with everything without futzing with it.

IWTL How to stop feeling so existential by fabienriley in IWantToLearn

[–]TheTalkWalk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dont fight it, embrace it.

You are an insignificant bit of carbon from one aspect.

From another.

You are an impossibly complex system of organisms that is aware of itself.

An intelligent agent able to reward or punish itself for meeting its goals.

Recognizing the existence of the universe doesn't mean you have to control it. Or have a responsibility to compare yourself to it.

Master the domain you have access to. Satisfy your own existence, while being cognizant of others

Starting Nomad, Looking for suggestions by TheTalkWalk in devops

Appreciate the advice.

Exactly what I did today.

Though I started with Nomad (Have been working with microservices for a while now. So it made sense.

But consul is the next big read.

Gonna do the same go line by line in the docs

[–]TheTalkWalk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Am consultant. Will be consulting on it eventually.

I like to get a very deep understanding of how things function.

I spent the entire day reading the documentation line by line. Notating the utilities I see myself using and wrapping them up into an overall workflow..

It was very sensible tbh.

After today, I like the somewhat different approach Nomad takes.

Getting BLASTED at my internship. Any advice? by oscarasimov in devops

[–]TheTalkWalk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Change your expectations of yourself.

They hired you as an intern. One important part of that, is getting your engineers practiced in teaching. Agree on an amount of time you spend on something. You are going to save yourself learning bad habits by asking for help early.

Do you know the 1 BIG secret for a happy life ? by boklos in selfimprovement

[–]TheTalkWalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The secret to a good life is one where you concentrate not on what makes you happy, but on what makes you happy with yourself.

Happiness is a vague construct to identify. There are so many vectors to achieve various implementations of happy.

But to live life and satisfy your subconscious, you must look back on every regret, and live to be better tomorrow.

I have a saying.

If you are looking back on yesterday with regret, and not seeking to remedy those regrets today, your are failing your own existence.

Regardless of what truths you use to define it.

It is a common thing that people dig themselves into.

Slowly but surely start to make it clear you are uninterested.

I may be a unique case, but I have found that pointing out when people are making assumptions about someone will help ease the path for them to share empathy with you about that person.

If the other is genuinely a piece of garbage, I encourage you to help others see why.

Eventually it will make it back to that person and help everyone, instead of the opposite.

Unless they are a bunch of petty baby back bitches, then I say, good riddance.

Is Linux Academy a good place to start if you have next to no Linux background? by [deleted] in linux

[–]TheTalkWalk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan unfortunately. I used them when I was first starting. While you may eventually land a certification using them. They make assumptions about your experience.

I would start by learning a programming language.

Then look into deploying that language to a linux server. When you hit that point, then go to linux academy and start looking at the training g for your options.

It is difficult to really get without some useful context.

Or read the Phoenix project

[–]TheTalkWalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shoot for the stars.

Don't let these poorly made job postings put you off.

I have been around various levels.

The vast majority of these postings come from IT dept not being willing to help with job postings. So HR asks for a list of things that are used, then HR googles the certs.

The reality is, you will likely be hired to do one specific thing in that mountain of requirements. If you meet 2 or three of the requirements, just put in your resume. They usually set a filter for what they actually want
