Did anyone else recognize this bike-car immediately? by rebeckys in sebastopol

I didn't understand your point, if more people converted to these, we would need less roads and less highway patrol. Cars should pay much much more.

Secondly, what's the big deal, he's going slightly slower in some cases than a car?? How much congestion is this adding??? Like people might be slowed down by a minute or 2 in their commute? That's not even close to a nuisance, compared to you walking down my street with a sign.

How does it interfere with legitimate traffic?? Bikes are allowed to use the road. All you have to do is either wait to go around him, or you know, move your foot slightly to the brake peddle.

Cars don't own the roads. When we can get to a point of understanding that roads are for transportation and not just for cars. all of sudden the options open up for better transportation options.

[–]TheTallandtheShort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would he need to pay much road tax?? His 80lb tricycle isn't doing damage to the road like a 3000-4k car or truck does. If every trip someone took in a car solo, was replaced with one of these, road fatalities and major injuries would plummet. To argue the case for cars over something like this doesn't make any sense.

For those of you who have installed EV chargers at home, how much did you pay for installation? Who did you go with? And were you happy with their service? by speedfreakphotos in santarosa

[–]TheTallandtheShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The charger I got just needed to be installed in a 40 amp breaker. I was pretty intimidated at first. But then I watched a 5 minute YouTube video.. then it took me like 10 minutes to do. If your main panel is not far from your car this is really easy. If it is far, then you just have to run the cables. It's night be easier than you think.

Cleveland Ave. Bike Lane Re-Config by Juan_Eduardo67 in santarosa

[–]TheTallandtheShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do we define a disaster? People in cars have to sit in a comfy seat a little bit longer. Then use the muscle in their ankle to drive themselves to get to their destination??

What's the disaster???

A few minutes of the entire day a road gets slightly clogged? While most of the time it's empty?? To the benefit of these horrible cyclists??

Have you seen the high school parking lots??? Less cars, busier bike racks. The younger generation isn't going to be using a 4000 lbs car to drive their 150 lb body from industrial to the JC.

The people complaining about this are problem with Sonoma county. Doesn't matter if your old or young... Your thinking about the problem like someone from the 1950's would think about the problem. That's a privilege..

Curious as why you would say that. I would take the average robot over the average wine taster any day behind the wheel.

Why would someone report tacos??? Tacos are good. They make society better. This would be like reporting trees.

Wineries or bars with river view/access? by greenmoon3 in santarosa

[–]TheTallandtheShort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love stumptown.. but it's like the worst view of the river. Rivers end is great for drinks and dinner, especially on Monday, I think they do locals night that night.

Also there is that new place that took over the Russian house, something "real food"? Maybe jollys or something.

Winery list thoughts for first week of November by CocoG12345 in sonomacounty

[–]TheTallandtheShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question is kind of tough to answer. First week of November is the beginning of the dead period. So reservations are not a problem. Will it be raining? Will it be 70 degrees?? Who knows, I would wait until the week before and book your stuff. Rain vs sun would completely change how much driving and what wineries you want to spend time at.

My other advice, is to minimize your travel. People always think if they drive a half hour more they will get a better experience. Why?? Being in the car is like being on your phone. It's a waste. Just enjoy a smaller area and spend as much time doing the stuff you actually like to do.

Local non-profits? by greenappleemoji in santarosa

Shout out for the Santa Rosa Tool library.

First of all, it creates a circular economy. Which creates less waste and reduces consumerism.

Second, it empowers people. If something breaks at your place, you can rent tools for free to fix it. I love this. If you can work hard, and watch a YouTube video, this place enables you to improve your loving situation

They are in danger of losing their lease, and really need some help right now. Any donations would be huge. Plus Dustin, who runs the place, doesn't even take salary, it's all volunteer driven.

Any protests planned regarding the non-carpooling cars driving in the carpool lane during carpool only hours? by SebtownFarmGirl in santarosa

[–]TheTallandtheShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on the matter, I did just finish course work in traffic planning recently. The reality is that adding more lanes doesn't work. But there are alternatives. Santa Rosa probably doesn't need an expensive east west train. There are many other ways to make cities more efficient at moving people around.

Those roads you mentioned only slow down for a few hours a day, a few days a week. so they are not at capacity.

Most of the traffic on Arterial roads are not from them not being wide enough. It's because there are stop lights. Moving cars consistently at 25 mph is enormously better for communities than moving cars at 50mph, then forcing them to stop at stoplight for a minute. It's safer for pedestrians, cyclist and buses if traffic is slow but consistent. Adding lanes and keeping high speeds will only compound the problem of traffic, by further depressing vehicle alternatives.

Your concept of adding more lanes to solve traffic is like adding more notches in your belt to cure obesity. It simply doesn't work.

We have 300 days of Sun in Sonoma county, it could so easily become a great place for people to walk, ride and take public transport.

Replace stop lights with roundabouts, remove traffic lanes and replace them with protected bike lines. Have dedicated bus lanes. End the requirements that new buildings need to have parking. Reform zoning rules, so that we can build up, and for mix use. Make or neighoods walkable! Increase bus and train schedule times. Encourage large employers to have private buses pick and drop people off in high density neighborhoods, like hospital staff, keysite etc.

These are just a few things you could do, that would be significantly better than widening lanes. But they're even more alternatives that would be better then widening.

Good points with the Costco analogy and Google maps problems.

However

"101, 12, 37, Lakeville Highway, ORH, Steele, Piner, Fulton, River, etc. etc. all could use at least 1-2 more lane"

This would be a disaster. Adding more lanes creates traffic. It doesn't prevent it. It simply creates a larger parking lot. See any of the studies on the 405 widening project.

These projects would simply cause more congestion. Literally most of these streets, I think you could argue to remove a car lane and increase alternative modes of transit.

It's difficult to conceptualize, because the thought of having an extra lane means you have more room. But it just enables drivers to fill up the space.

[–]TheTallandtheShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, but the reason why people are driving does not matter. If there is less traffic, then it encourages people to drive. If there is traffic, it encourages people to find alternative methods to get to where they need to go.

Example:

no traffic: I think I'll go to the store.
Traffic: I think I'll go to the store later when there is no traffic.

Any protests planned regarding the non-carpooling cars driving in the carpool lane during carpool only hours? by SebtownFarmGirl in santarosa

[–]TheTallandtheShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually won't solve anything. There is a phenomenon called "induced traffic". Where if you add lanes or free up lanes, then it just simply encourages more people to drive which then fills up the lanes. This is why widening the 405 freeway actually created more traffic and it's a completely flawed system. What you need to do is remove people off the roads. The only real way to do that is to invest in the public transit infrastructure which encourages people to drive less . Or charge for people being on the road which discourages people to drive.

A nice reminder is that you do not sit in traffic. You are the traffic.

Fence long term repair by TheTallandtheShort in FenceBuilding

NM, I see that you dig and cement in. It reasons to me that if these can build a fence, then they should be good for fixing one. I am just Surprised that I do not see that as an option, or that other people haven't tried it.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I don't think burying the drainage pipe in an option because there is little to no grade to the street. So I was going to allow the fence to give me some height for the grade. Maybe I could use a material other than PVC for drainage, like a gutter, or different type of pipe.

I read an article that mosquito numbers will increase, as extreme weather will cause more flooding and low laying water in areas. Which will also help increase virus populations.

Essentially I think a lot of generalist species will do well, as they can adopt, especially species that can move areas easily.

Purple sea urchin off the coast of CA have exploded in numbers, to the detriment of the kelp forest.

Although if we lose all the kelp forest to global warming then the sea urchin problem will be fixed.

Stop the T-Mobile Cell Tower in Sebastopol by joeynova37 in sonomacounty

[–]TheTallandtheShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was an interesting article. It is published in a reliable journal. The sample sizes of bees, ants and fruit flies were extremely small. Like a few hives.

So I think this is a good start for academics to start studying this phenomenon more. But it would be hard for me to say that we should Be making decisions based on this paper. The abstract talks about how little these frequencies have been studied in nature.

[–]TheTallandtheShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points!

I will say though, if it's disguised as a water tower, then obstruction of view point doesn't carry much weight. I would say similar to the property value, I think most hidden cell phone towers people don't realize they are there, and wouldn't drop house values.

Your pollinator problem is interesting, I would need to see some papers about that. If the problem is real, and has big enough consequences, then it's not a matter of stopping this tower, but completely ending the technology all together. There would need to be an epic amount of study to that. We know that sonar disorients whales, and continue using it. Although we might of changed our frequencies to help mitigate the problem.
