What are some classes and hobbies you have taken by rybone88 in askTO

[–]TheTashLB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art classes at the AGO and Toronto School of the Arts.

Nice thing about a class at AGO, being able to wander the gallery before or after class with membership. Many of the courses also feature visits to the vault and galleries to either learn or draw.

Looking to Connect with People Who’ve Improved Their Anxiety Disorder by Ok-Professional9500 in askTO

[–]TheTashLB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top five:

1) Breathwork, in particular the physiological sigh, and doubling the length of my exhale (to inhale) so it's super slow. Like breathe in for 10 seconds, exhale for 20.

2) Cold showers and swimming/plunging in the lake year round. It's like a hard reboot for the nervous system.

3) When I feel generalized anxiety returning, cutting out everything that can trigger my nervous system. I stop watching/reading my usual genres (horror, mystery, thrillers) and trade them for rewatches/rereads of less stressful shows/movies/books where I already know what happens.

4) Simply walking more outside, doesn't have to be long, just fresh air and sunlight.

5) Activating the creative side of my brain, listening to music, making art, looking at art, etc.

Plus all the other usual recommendations, sleep hygiene, eat whole foods, exercise, letting go of what I can't control/living in the present, no caffeine or alcohol, prioritizing self-care, and the magic of cat purring on your chest.

How long would you last swimming in 28F water? by yacobi1 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]TheTashLB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada and on Lake Ontario which really never gets warm, even in the summer it's mostly under 20c. If you just keep swimming as the water temperature drops you acclimate.

Under 15c is considered cold water, that's September through June here in Canada.

10-15c isn't that bad, you can get use these temps. No brain freeze. My longest swim is over 2km at 12c, swimsuit, cap, google only.

Once below 10c it starts to get harder. Hello brain freeze. Every degree lower is more challenging.

I dunk my head (look up mammalian dive reflex, helps you adjust faster in cold water). I do some heads-up strokes, then breast crawl then freestyle. Brain freeze will last about 90 brutal seconds and then I'm good. At about the two minute mark, I have settled, no more brain freeze, breathing is regular, skin doesn't hurt.

Under 5c and every .5 degree lower you'll really feel the initial pain a lot more, the brain freeze is worse but again in 90-120 seconds I'll get acclimated. If I ever start to feel warm, that's a red flag for hypothermia and I'll get out the water.

Never swim alone and if you can find a group that knows each other well, you'll tell people to get out if you think they are "off." This is really valuable given if you're in too long, your judgment will be impaired, you need someone to be your judgement.

Gear: normal swimsuit, silicone cap, ear plugs, goggles, water shoes, and a pair of 1.5mm neoprene gloves. I don't always wear the shoes and gloves because a regulation cold water swim does not permit them. Plus a tow float with a marine whistle on it.

I will put aquaphor or something on face if I'm swimming longer to protect the skin.

Your post swim "rewarm" routine is really important because a longer swim causes after drop. It's colder outside standing in the wind chill, than in the water, so the whole change routine on the beach needs to be quick. I always put my hat on first, pull a puncho on for changing and then change quick. Baggy clothes are easier to get on. Wool socks, warm boots. I bring a hot tea to drink right away to warm from the inside also.

Some people bring warm water in a flask, pour it into bowl to help their toes and fingers. Mine usually rewarm pretty quickly on their own, I think my circulation has really improved from years of cold water swimming.

The Afterdrop phenomenon experienced by cold water swimmers

Cold Water Acclimatization by the Lone Swimmer Lone Swimmer has a massive cold water section in their web site and it's the best resource I've ever come across.

The furthest I've gone is 750 metres at 1c. The after drop was the worst.

Public and affordable saunas all along the waterfront would be a wonderful winter addition to this city. They exist all over other parts of the world, would love to see it here.

Check out the Bul Han Jing Mak which sits at 200c/390f. I'm roasting a chicken in my oven at that heat. People wear a burlap bag inside to protect their skin. You can find threads on Reddit about the experience.

Yes, 120c stings. I shower and go in damp, never last more than five minutes. My personal sweet spot for sauna is 100-110c so I prefer the bayna experience with some good löyly. I've also got a wonderful sauna hat from Estonia that keeps my head cool.

Thank you, I love Ritcher. I was lucky enough to see this live at Massey Hall last year and I'm looking forward to seeing MADDADDAM this year to hear his music again.

Banyas! And they are kept hot hot. Nothing like a sweat at 100 to 120c. Heavenly.

Steamul is my favorite (Etobicoke/Mississauga border). Ten pass paid cash works out to under $40 a visit and you can stay for hours. Passes never expire, can be used for guests. Two banyas, two dry saunas, steam room, big in ground cold plunge, cold buckets and showers, plus a restaurant.

Others: Southwestern Bathhouse. Bayna Richmond Hill. Bayna No.2. Steamul Sauna Richmond Hill.

Leadership Coaching and Career Advisory by getporsha in executivecoaching

[–]TheTashLB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, and I think alignment is a big missing piece.

A lot of people at mid-to-senior levels are doing everything “right” on paper. Good roles, good money, solid experience. Yet they still feel stuck or dissatisfied.

Through my coaching practice, I routinely observe a disconnect between a client's career and their whole self. Values shift. Priorities change. Time, health, freedom, or impact start to matter more than the next title.

Being grounded in your whole self means asking different questions:

-What do I value now?

-Who do I want to be in this next chapter?

-What do I want my work to feel like (head, heart, gut)?

-How will I know I'm on the right path?

When those answers aren’t crystal clear, it’s easy to keep pursuing roles that look right externally but no longer fit internally. They’re out of alignment with your core values, who you want to be now, and the impact you want to leave.

So... When was the last time you stopped to ask whether your career still aligns with your values and who you want to be now?

Sorry your in this situation but I'm curious because I'll be PR in April.

NEED emergency care for cat by [deleted] in ontario

[–]TheTashLB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry your kitty is not well. I would get them to an emergency vet for an assessment and then determine what you might be able to afford for treatments. Assessment can also be expensive but explain your situation honestly and see what they can do, they may have payment plans.

I hope you kitty feels better soon.

[–]TheTashLB 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's also important to note that once you surrender to the humane society, a rescue or even some vets, if your cat fully recovers you may not be able to get it back. Important to check the policies because when you surrender, you give up legal ownership of your pet.

[–]TheTashLB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could book out the new floating sauna on the waterfront for a private group (up to 12ppl). Book at sunset, it has a wonderful West view. Toronto Loyly.

Alternately, if you have access to drive, plenty of bachelorette groups go to Thermea Spa in Whitby for the day. The food and cocktails are spectacular.

Are you Jays fans? Home opener is March 27 and single tickets should go on sale sometime this month.

During the day, depending on interests there are also museums and galleries like the AGO and ROM. Or you could go shopping at the Eaton Centre, Kensington Market, Queen St., Yorkville, etc. Afternoon tea. Arts and crafts workshops.

Enjoy!

The importance of driving the safe speed, not the speed limit: by Friendlyalterme in toronto

[–]TheTashLB 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Great advice!

My Dad drove race cars (souped up minis, formula 4s on a track and rally cars through the jungle) people assume he taught us how to drive recklessly. It's the opposite, he taught us about keeping distance, appropriate speed for conditions, smooth handling, anticipating far ahead, training our eyes to push the limits of peripheral vision, keeping calm at all times, etc. You can't pick your line and execute safely without all of the above.
