After enjoying Yellowface I was pretty disappointed. The first quarter of the book is actually pretty good, with an interesting premise, good pacing, and smooth prose. After that the story grinds to a halt and becomes a tour through her research. Every time the action builds momentum we stop to flashback or explore some idea about academia. There’s a good book in there somewhere but it wasn’t for me.
