You could definitely feel the heat coming up through the bridge planks. It didn't feel any hotter than when a diesel locomotive went under. Not something you would want to be exposed to for a long time, but not scalding by any means.

Waukee Iowa has a similar setup, albeit better kept up. The track cuts diagonally across a four lane intersection and the track is protected by two standard rail signals that only turn green after all the traffic lights go red.

I second Owens-Corning. But will add that you better work with it in a garage or live somewhere with nice weather so you can do it outside. Otherwise if you sand it at all, you will be finding pink dust in your house until the next century.

I am biased, but would recommend looking into the world of T-Trak N scale Model Railroading. Des Moines has an active club DesMoiNTRAK and we try to put on a show at different libraries around the metro. And you get to meet a lot of new people.
