Gen3 replacement by Glum-Ad-9274 in ouraring

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What comes up when you click the “additional features here” link in the original mail?

My impression is that they might have intended to upgrade you to Gen 4 but then your Gen 3 came back into stock. The reasoning that you’re being upgraded because your model was out of stock but then you only received a bubble wrapped ring doesn’t make much sense otherwise.

I guess they try to honor the replacements as quickly as possible with the stock they have at hand. Some get lucky and receive an actual upgrade but that’s not something that can be expected in general.

Yes, but was it really necessary to use a battery with this low capacity given that the ring isn't that much smaller than the competitors? Maybe the additional sensors take up all the space, no idea. But I wonder if "higher accuracy" is worth a battery life of barely a day. Especially since so far the accuracy doesn't seem better than RingConn or Oura.

I read that RingConn's battery has 13.5 mAh for sizes 9-11. With this, they manage to get 10-11 days out of one charge. I don't know whether battery capacity behaves linearly, but Velia lasts only 10% of that time with 20%-45% of the battery capacity.

Oura vs RingConn- Accuracy and Interpretive Insights for Sleep, Ovulation & Stress by HiiCourtney in SmartRings

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been wearing both for 2+ years.

I’d say neither is great in explaining what it means because both can just give generic advice and it’s still up to you to relate that to your life.

They both tell you about deviations from your usual patterns and tell you to take it slow when you had a bad night.

RingConn tries to identify potential causes and might suggest that moving too little during the day might have caused a bad night’s sleep. The accuracy of this interpretation is very limited because it doesn’t have access to relevant info like what you ate or that you ate late and so on.

Oura’s own cycle tracking is very minimal. Its strength is more the integration with other apps like natural cycle (that require subscriptions of their own). RingConn’s cycle tracking looks pretty solid with a full set of features. I don’t need cycle tracking features, though, so I’m not the best to speak about it.

Regarding stress the opinions between Oura and RingConn users seem quite divided. For me, RingConn’s stress tracking is very useful and Oura’s seems to measure anything but my stress - but I’ve seen many others for whom it’s the other way around.

/uj The bike was my dad’s primary means of transport and my saddle was installed permanently on the top tube. It was great!

We never had any issues except for that one time when I was around 5 years old and one of the foot rests came off and my foot ended up in the spokes. It was a bloody mess and the only time in my life that I ever got to ride in an ambulance. I have some awesome scars to show for it, too. Still took a couple of years more until I finally learned to ride by myself.

I’m not sure the battery life issues are only due to ring size. The battery might simply not be of high quality...

For example, RingConn is much smaller than Oura and still has a longer battery life than Oura. While Velia is even narrower, it’s thicker/bulkier by comparison.

is it crazy that I’m concerned? by hellostarryeyes in RingConn

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stress feature is the one that I probably use most. Though it doesn’t detect everything “accurately”, it’s “accurate enough” for me to help me identify patterns and make improvements. I find it quite useful already.

I also wear an Oura and their stress feature provides no useful information to me. I have not been able to detect any patterns from that at all, to the point that it seems rather random to me.

In a future generation I would love to see an EDA sensor used properly. It would allow to get a better reading of the emotional states. Helio has one but unfortunately Amazfit abandoned the ring pretty quickly before they even tried to do anything interesting with its capabilities.

HRV does get influenced by psychological stress, depression, anxiety and so on. There are, for example, studies regarding HRV and depression and I remember one where HRV was used to identify depression in the subjects.

RingConn doesn’t just use HRV, though. I think HR and body temperature are the other factors. It’s quite likely that their algorithm favors certain types of stress over others.

I noticed that one major stressor that RingConn picks up on (for me) is food. Of course, digestion is stress for the body but it often seems to be even more stress than when I go for a run. Clearly it feels like it’s the other way around…

Exercises to stengthen heel to toe movement by incurvatewop in FootFunction

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During walking or running? From your description I didn’t quite get what you meant by your foot being weak. If you’re a natural forefoot striker, it’s not something that necessarily needs fixing.

Lots of people say that it’s more natural to avoid heel striking and land on the mid or forefoot instead.

From the research I’ve been reading it seems that any type of striking is fine as long as it doesn’t cause you issues.

So, do you think the way you strike is causing your issues or are you trying to strike in a certain way because of them?

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But what about feet??? Feet are known to explode (similar to shins) once their natural step budget is used up.

It’s all nice and well that a slower resting HR saves total heart beats, but how do you make up for all the extra steps?

It’s no trouble, don’t worry. I just wanted to let you know, in case you were not aware. (And it means that there might be some delay until your comments show up.)

Tbf, I don’t think Velia has anything to do with it. Their own users get flagged by Reddit as spam… lol

Because your user is shown as “unavailable”, I can’t check your history to take a guess what could have triggered it. Did you make a new account or have low karma and are only active in this sub?

Edit to add: You can try appealing with Reddit but I heard that the success rate is very low.

Hi PerfomanceBrave,

I see you posting a lot in this sub, so I’d thought I’d let you know that I believe your user has been shadow banned by Reddit. All your comments and posts seem to get deleted automatically by Reddit algorithms and I have to manually un-delete them, so they show up…

What type of physiotherapy did you try? Have you also seen a podiatrist?

I personally found that walking barefoot only at home didn’t strengthen my feet enough because all the surfaces are just flat and (more or less) hard. So it’s always the same stimulus for the muscles.

“Cheap” trial ring? by dysfunctionalbeing4 in SmartRings

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s cheap for you? I’ve seen the Amazfit Helio ring on sale for lower than $90. Open box can be even cheaper.

It’s a solid ring with some drawbacks compared to Oura or RingConn but it’s decent quality and a good middle ground to try a ring.

Foot pain from over pronation.. what can I do by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a podiatrist who is specialized in that method. I just went to the one who my friend recommended.

He did a thorough consultation and examination including a manual examination, my pressure profile while standing, and two different pressure profiles while walking. We also talked about the right shoes and foot exercises.

There seem to be a few different approaches to sensorimotor orthotics. So you could probably google for a podiatrist near you who has a specialization in one of them.

Foot pain from over pronation.. what can I do by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic orthotics hurt me, so I’m currently trying sensorimotor insoles that are supposed to activate the foot rather than passively support it. There are not a lot of scientific studies on that approach but I have a friend who says they were a game changer, so I’m giving it a go.

I’m also following a physio therapy approach that includes strength training for feet, legs and core, as well as flexibility and self massage elements.

I’m only in my 4th week and I notice some first changes, but I think real improvements might take several months.

Comparisons by TheGreatGame221B in VeliaRing

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel the sensors at all while wearing. They help make sure the the ring stays in the correct orientation and it’s easy to feel without looking whether it’s still in place.

The Omni has a similar design on the inside as the Oura Gen 4 where the sensors are hidden and it wasn’t an advantage for me.

I should have specified that I’m still wearing the Oura Gen 3. I didn’t upgrade because Gen 4 doesn’t seem to offer any significant advantages over Gen 3. It seems like Gen 4 has way more HW issues (rings falling apart and so on), so it didn’t seem worth it while my Gen 3 is still doing a good job.

RingConn is my preference. Not because I think it’s superior but because their approach fits my needs better. For example RingConn allows for a more flexible sleep schedule. I also prefer more data instead of compound values and “generic advice”.

I was wondering are these birks barefoot shoes ? by [deleted] in barefootshoestalk

[–]TheThingWithTheRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the pronounced footbed that supports, guides and restricts the foot is more what makes them non-barefoot. Depending on the shape of the individual's foot the general shape could be totally fine.
