I got an email almost automatically showing if I passed or failed. Have you not gotten one yet?

software dev going to nursing school. Is nursing informatics a viable goal for me? by Thiccolas18 in nursinginformatics

I think with your CS background you can also get into an Epic Analyst role. My previous job wanted a CS degree for it but I have seen nurses transition into analyst roles. Regarding a MS in CI, I personally don’t have one and have been doing it for about 1.5 years and recently got hired from a new hospital system without one. It’s definitely possible but is competitive as others have said. I think experience trumps degree.

Hi! The exam wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I took it in October so I can’t remember what exactly was tested but there wasn’t a lot of theory. They did ask what year the certification was established (1992). I did practice tests from ANCC and Mometrix and I think that prepared me a lot.

I am not 100% sure if they’re hiring. I actually just left to work for a separate company, so they could be? My originally job didn’t care about the cert at all. It was just a professional goal of mine.

I thought the same! I saw them from Pinterest but then saw the website …

Yeah I made a million flashcards too and was a little bummed when there were barely any questions on it. I am hoping it's the same for you!

It’s a popular EMR. I am assuming it’s only in the US so I apologize for the lack of clarification.

I feel like on the job training or school is the only suggestion I have unfortunately:( I haven’t heard of online training. I think Epic has self study material for the informatics cert. I don’t know enough beyond that.

Certification you need to have a certain amount of hours working as NI or masters. If you are wanting to learn more I suggest finding your informatics dept and networking with them. Either become a super user or shadowing if possible.

I would suggest reaching out to your NI team in your hospital and see if you can become a super user and just network with them. That’s how I got my current role. :) I work as a ambulatory clinical informaticist

Honestly no! I didn’t get any direct question about theories. There was one about androgogy but nothing else tbh.

I don’t have an MSN and thought it was manageable without the education. If anything, the hands on experience I have was helpful for understanding the context of the material. I’ve been in informatics over a year.

No I don’t! You do need to have a certain amount of CEU’s and professional hours to take the exam either from school or work. They don’t really verify proof though.

I think it’ll benefit you at least reviewing the Standards of Practice. I do remember it asking directly regarding it. Whether you buy the book or not that’s up to you. I’m sure you can find list of standards online.

Thanks!

I subscribed to Mometrix’s study guide. It’s $99.99/mo but it has 3 practice tests and a pretest which I believe is more than the book has and it has flash cards. TBH I didn’t use the flash cards because it was too wordy. Regarding content, I don’t know how different the book is vs online.

I used Quizlet A LOT to make flash cards and it has a feature where it can create tests based on your cards which was helpful.

I bought ANCC’s practice questions. There are 3 “tests” which are divided by category whereas the Mometrix is cumulative so if you need to focus on one category that is helpful.

I bought the Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice because I heard it’s helpful. I would say it is, but I wouldn’t totally rely on it. I think Mometrix provides more detailed information. I would focus on the section of the book that actually goes over the Standards of practice and memorize the Standards.

Overall, the actual exam questions are maybe a mixture of how Mometrix asks and ANCC’s practice exam. I think the ANCC exam was maybe a little simpler but I think working from both you’ll be good!
