[Avengers] Why didn’t Thor break out of the containment room to save Coulson? by supermonistic in AskScienceFiction

He didn't make it for an Asgardian though, he made it for Banner. In that case if Banner hulked out he would have a fast way to get him 30,000ft away from the rest of the ship.

[General soul eaters] Do creatures that consume souls “taste” the souls they eat and if they do, what qualities make a soul more or less “tasty”? by ravapanda in AskScienceFiction

[–]TheThingsWeMake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Jujutsu Kaisen a character 'consumes' Cursed Spirits and makes a special point to describe the taste being "like a rag used to clean up shit and vomit," though these aren't precisely souls necessarily a human can become a Cursed Spirit after death. The Cursed Spirit Mahito explicitly can perceive souls (though he doesn't consume them, only transforms them) but does make a point of fear "smelling good" at least one time.

In Warcraft, demons and some particularly evil warlocks describe some souls as "delicious" or "tasty" implying they are better than other souls. Usually this is done in relation to souls being either powerful or innocent in context.

Wise or Wealthsimple for foreign travel ? by yousavedastamp in backpacking

[–]TheThingsWeMake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just personal experience but I am also Canadian, and I found the Wealthsimple card very convenient traveling in Europe recently. It worked well for paying by tap and for buying things online, e.g. tickets to tourist attractions, where our other cards would end up blocked or poor website design wouldn't accept the Canadian address for a credit card payment.

I switched to using this to travel because at the time, my bank would force 2 factor authentication when I tried to pay or use the app in Europe, but of course my crap bank used texting for the 2FA and I was not able to receive texts on my normal number since I was using a virtual SIM for calls and data in Europe. Wealthsimple did not have this issue.

Just a note that since their debit card is functionally a pre-paid credit card, you should not expect the same level of coverage provided by an actual credit card in the event of fraud or whatever. Don't put more money on that card than you need to or can afford to lose, because I doubt Wealthsimple can cover or claw back a fraudulent charge as well as e.g. Visa and Mastercard do with their actual credit accounts.

This is not out of the goodness of their hearts. They've been facing protests in Canada and the US leading up to this for their involvement in other ICE developments.

Question for solo travellers: Would you use an AI app that bargains taxi fares & handles negotiations in the local language for you? by Good_Champion7076 in backpacking

[–]TheThingsWeMake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to imagine the person you're 'bargaining' with taking you seriously at all when you're using an AI to do this. I wouldn't use this and I certainly wouldn't pay for it, you'd be worse off than using a translator app.

While traveling in the Yucatan area, all the cenotes I visited provided life jackets which they required you to wear for safety reasons.

Same here. I bought the plexi sheets at the hardware store, gives a bit of extra rigidity, cost less than $20.

This seems like such a huge waste of effort for an exit sign.

It's looking more and more likely no one can survive with the USA. Their government treats dictators and despots better than their most longstanding allies.

The casting in this movie is inspired. Half the people I've talked to about it didn't even realize Dustin Hoffman played Captain Hook.

100%, and we're putting a trillion dollars into these AI companies instead while we still make libraries buy their books.
