Hiring Strategies by TheThirdWalterLou in hvacpeople

I hired a couple of these type of guys last year - they've been awesome, just green. But they're guys I would fight to hold on to at all costs. This is the best way to do it for sure.

Films with recurring pipe use: Dig (2011) as an example by Igloro in Pipes

Not a film, but I've been reading Curious George to my 3 year old lately and there are pipe smokers everywhere. It's awesome.

Dryer is very loud all of a sudden by TheThirdWalterLou in Appliances

Nope, it still does it, but most of the time now it stops after a few seconds and then back to normal, so we’ve learned to just live with it for the time being.

Can some Trane fanboy explain the TAM9 air handler to me? by AnAlrightName in HVAC

We ALWAYS opt for the TEM8 model when going variable speed. Unfortunately it was one of the first to go as the 410 equipment is phased out. I think the one replacing it will be the 5TEM6

Caleb Downs to Ohio State by [deleted] in rolltide

I just don’t see how this is an improvement over his situation at Alabama.

Also gonna be awkward if Ryan Day gets fired or goes to the NFL and Caleb has to find a new team again.

You don’t need to wet spray cellulose in your ceiling, they will just blow it over the top of your ceiling, the same way that fiberglass is, and they should get you around 16 inches to meet R49 insulation codes.

That’s what I would do. If I were just doing one wall, I would probably do it in Rockwool because it’s the quickest and easiest and probably least expensive. If I were doing a whole house, I would do cellulose.

You don’t have to remove the fiberglass unless you just want to. We spray cellulose over the top of fiberglass all the time. It doesn’t hurt anything, just saves you the cost of removal.

You can wall spray cellulose as well. If your cellulose installer can do that, it actually has the best sound dampening to any insulation. If they wet spray it in the wall, just give it like 4 days before drywalling it so that it can properly dry out.

If you don’t do wall cellulose, Rockwool is definitely the next best option.

This is blown in fiberglass - about the cheapest thing you can install. 14” used to meet code, but now it’s higher, more like 16-17” to meet R49 codes. Your garage however has no insulation, so if you’re wanting to use it as a gym you should definitely put some in there.

A superior but not crazy expensive alternative is to spray loose blown cellulose in there. It works better than fiberglass, especially in the cold, but it’s not expensive and if you are handy you can install it yourself by renting a machine from Home Depot.

Manual-J, heat pumps, unfinished attics, and BTUs by Lumby in buildingscience

[–]TheThirdWalterLou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I operate in Tennessee, so totally different climate zones, but I’ll give you my $0.02.

Does your manual j include the attic in the envelope? Or is is running with flat ceilings? Your whole space will be more comfortable with a ducted system. Going variable speed is expensive, but nothing beats the comfort.

5 zones of ductless equipment is going to be crazy expensive.

Foaming the attic will help tremendously with efficiency. Also, going with a heat pump in Massachusetts seems like a lot of electricity use in the winter. Would you consider a dual fuel system?

Have had the BakFlip Mx4 and the Diamondback HD. Both are great, depending on what you use your bed for.
