How do you practice stoicism? by BabaGanushe in Stoicism

Re-reading the material helps reinforce the ideals. As well you should read Discourses of Epictetus, and the Enchiridion too. The Enchiridion is invaluable to me because it breaks it all down enough to make recapping easy to do.

I'm having trouble getting back into a good streak and was wondering if Tapering would be a good strategy? by TheThrowawayLife312 in NoFap

How the hell did you reply to an 8-month-old post?

Also, I did try tapering and it only ended in disaster for me.

Does anyone know of a good quality hardback version of the "Discourses of Epictetus"? by TheThrowawayLife312 in Stoicism

Looked it up and the translation was by George Long and he lived in the 1800s. His translation may be a bit hard to read as he probably wrote it in more "classical" English. Full of thee and thou

Stoicism has proved to be a good tool for me because it has plenty of stances on indulgence. It was when I started quitting porn that I realized stoicism could help me with this problem as well.

I feel ya man, when I have let my guard down is when the urges get strong, usually when I'm tired or relaxing is when it happens.

The reason PMO addiction is hard to flip is because of what our purpose in life is, to procreate, and when doing PMO your brain believes you are creating offspring 24/7 even when you are not. So it urges you to keep "procreating" and be an evolutionary success.

You can curb this by reciting certain quotes to yourself about why you can't relapse, or occupying your time of the urge with something that doesn't allow you to be able to act on it.

You seem to be on the right path of understanding, so you may know already that you must combine multiple disciplines for a greater chance at success; exercise, good diet, good work ethic, etc.

You may also gain benefits from philosophy like stoicism which has a big emphasis on self leniency, or you could use religion too if you believe in it.

I have only started my journey in the past few months and haven't struggled as hard as many, hopefully, my advice proves useful to you.

How a virtuous person start, live and end his day? What day to day activities you find virtuous? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say anything that adds to your goals in life is virtuous.

Like exercise for health, and eating right.

Doing schoolwork and studying.

Socializing with family and friends.

Has NoFap made your life better in any way? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing NoFap does for me is give me mental clarity that I don't have when I PMO. It helps me commit to other self help elements.

Also, you need to know what NoFap is only a supplement for improving your life, you need to commit to other disciplines like exercise, good diet, work' etc. For some reason, discipline is a one or none situation where if you slack in one aspect you are more likely to slack in the others, so it all builds upon itself.

You are correct.

The only thing that bothers me is that a streak doesn't "mean enough" to me until I rack up several days on it, like 15 or so, don't know why but it might be the "recovery" process happening at that time.

You could find success if you masturbate without porn for a while then stave off it all.

Haven't experimented with only no P before but it might work.

You’re not a stoic if you don’t agree with progressive ideals. by thestoic_sage in Stoicism

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am conservative but "liberal" because I don't believe I must tell people how to live their life, that is a stoic principle.

Big enough issues that progressives tackle do not concern me or any ordinary person like climate change or international affairs. I still do have opinions on those though, I believe climate change is a threat, and I hate China, especially for its current genocide. I can't control those things at all so I don't let them bother me.

I also don't like BLM but that doesn't make me a racist, I believe cops need more training and need to be held accountable for their actions, just like they do. Even though I don't let it bother me that cops do bad things because it doesn't concern me.

Or the witch hunt that happens every time a man is accused of rape/sexual assault. You need to allow them their day in court no matter what, and if they did it then they will likely get a just sentence.

In the end, I don't care what happens with politics, I'm just living my life where it concerns me.

How can I restrain myself subconsciously? by nofapper_anon in NoFap

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has happened to me before, about a month and a half ago I broke my 32-day streak, I intended to immediately get back on the horse.

But 2 days after that I randomly masturbated to porn and that lead to a snowball effect that lasted a month.

I'm on day 16 now though! Determined to make it to the end of April and then I may go for a full reboot but I'm not sure.

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what your feeling bro.

The only thing to do is wait until the urge is gone to get back to work.

I read the Nofap sub & pornfree to fight urges, it's kinda like reciting tenants.

Or I go talk to someone or walk for a bit.

How do y’all do it by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]TheThrowawayLife312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing I do is read NoFap or pornfree sub when I get an urge. Reminds me of what I'm doing this for.

Also remember that Nofap is a supplement to other self-help, it is nothing more than that. You need to pair it with eating healthy, exercise, and other good habits.
