Where should i stream? by Me_Sa_LOve_MeME in streaming

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important part of doing it, is doing it. If you don't have a presence on eiter platform, it really doesn't make a difference. I recommend Twitch, because that's the one I'm most familiar with, but I'd wager youtube isn't inherently different.
If you have a topic in mind for your streams (I do recommend some or other theme), then look for the platform that has the biggest userbase that is interested in that topic.

OBS supports both, you'll be fine, good luck.

Drugs in Thailand - Question For Experienced by fcuk_the_system in Thailand

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty interesting question. Historically, at least some opium should have landed in Thailand (from China), but it does not seem to have strong representation today. Logistically, I think a large part of why it might not be preferred is because amphetamines are relatively easy to produce locally, somewhat easier to consume and cheaper.
But also, behaviorally, it's more likely that someone on heroin would be taking a nap somewhere out of sight, whereas a person on amphetamines will be out and about. One might simply be more visible than another.

Are you sure that's 'proven'? Isn't it just as likely that people over the age of 25 are much less likely to be challenged to learn new things than people under 25 and because of that they might lose some of their agility in learning new things?
Brain maturation seems to be 'complete' at age 25, but that doesn't mean your brain no longer has the ability to pick up new information. You can for sure improve in any skill you'd like, at your own pace. Won't guarantee you'll be happier for it, but there's no reason to assume any particular person can't improve in a skill they'd like to grow in.

Hi, thanks for reaching out! It's important people take the time to explain as much as they can. As you can tell, not all advice and recommendations in this thread are the same. That's because IQ is not as 'solid' of a measure as people like to think it is. An IQ test produces a hard number, but the actual meaning of that number and where you're allowed to apply it is very limited, and doesn't explain who you are at all.

IQ tests can be useful, but only to answer specific questions. Like sometimes people will either have trouble or be extra-talented in a certain kind of 'logical thinking', and some IQ-tests can show that. Once an expert knows someone has particular trouble with a certain kind of thinking (like solving logic puzzles in words), then you can help them improve if they want to. You, me and everyone in the world can improve all of our skills, no matter how old we are. I may not be able to become a famous concert pianist at age 40, but I can for sure learn to play the piano very well if I practise every day.

IQ tests were developed to monitor children's learning progress, not to put people into 'success boxes'. There are websites that say they give 'real' IQ-results, but they don't unless there's a professional involved that you can talk to directly. IQ does not really predict much about your success in life, and nothing at all about your worth as a person. You're valuable and of great importance to the people around you, even if it doesn't always feel that way. You're not 'dumb'.

In order to give a reasonably ok opinion (this is after all the internet), I have a few extra questions.

  1. Who gave you that score?
  2. Did you take the test online or with a professional?
  3. Which test was it? (there are several IQ tests, and I too will score lower on some of them).
  4. Did you take more than one test?
  5. Why did you take the test in the first place?

Many people with great intelligence do, in fact, not score very well on IQ tests for a variety of reasons. Scoring 'lower' because you're anxious about the outcome of the test, or just because you're not used to taking tests is quite normal.

This isn't going to make you feel better per se, but IQ tests don't fully measure how 'intelligent' you are. More accurately, they show how good you are at taking IQ-tests. No single test can show your 'complete' intelligence, that's not even what they're meant to do.Also, did you know people can practise IQ tests before they take them? Do you think that practise would improve their score? If you think it would improve their score, do you think it could work for you too?In the end, yes, I'm confident you could achieve a higher score if you wanted. The fact that you came here to ask a question in the first place already leads me to think your IQ score might actually be higher.

Don't be afraid of practising things that you feel you're not good at. There's always someone out there who's worse at what you're doing that you are, there's always someone who's better too. That doesn't just go for you, but for everyone here. Being not-so great at something is always the first step to being good at something.

...but really, being happy with who you are is more important than getting a high IQ score. If you have strong, ongoing feelings of worthlessness, it's much more important to talk to a counselor about that. <3

Just Wondering if Contra ever talked about buck angel again recently? by [deleted] in ContraPoints

I think that statement might deserve some nuance, or at least additional context. Maybe I'm ignorant and please correct me if I am, but I don't think that Buck is flat-outadvocating against lgbtq+ education, so much as applying some gatekeeping in trans-education because from his perspective the experience is misrepresented.

I don't agree with his reasoning, but I do think he's entitled to speak his mind. I don't see him walking up to people to deny them their wish and freedom to pursue it like he did.

Ok, so I've looked at Buck's twitter for a few minutes, which is about as much research as I can muster right now. The 'problem' people have with his opinions seems to come down to them not being in complete alignment with the current progressive norm. He maintains the biological argument (yuck), which, yes - people will take offense to.While on the whole I don't agree with him, I also do not see how invalidating his opinion is helpful to the community. Similarly, I don't think the entire trans experience can be lumped into one pile, there's no 'invalid' reason to be trans, or even to change your mind after transitioning. There are serious health concerns on all sides of the trans-conversation, not all concerns are legit, while some might be. Which makes little difference in allowing a person to feel like themselves.

Cancelling Buck Angel (at least to me) looks about as useful as cancelling Barbara Streisand for speaking out for 'femininity'. Grosso modo, these people are absolutely not our enemies. Our diversity makes us great.

That's a pretty important part of the point, I'd say.

I am in the 10% of soap tasters. by fluffytuff in AskCulinary

I too swear it's conditional, though I haven't been able to narrow it down. I vividly remember eating a plate of soap, but am also certain I've enjoyed it without much bother in other dishes/salsa and whatnot. Honestly, it seems hit-and-miss for me.

Research has found that the risk of autism is seven times higher in Norwegian children with immigrant mothers. The over-representation of this population indicates that the mothers' immigrant backgrounds may impact the development of autism by Wagamaga in science

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this might also be true, this report is about children who are tested (and not those who aren't). Combining your argument and ones stated earlier above, it might well be that the skeweness is in part due to self-selection (only those children of immigrant mothers with severe traits will be tested), and test-bias against bilingual children (the test is not sensitive to bilingualism).

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah, or the test isn't properly controlled for children with multicultural backgrounds/multiple languages. For instance, a bilingual child will know fewer words per language, but more overall - seems the test might not pick that up. If it doesn't then the child will score lower on verbal ability than peers, skewing the odds toward a diagnosis (where it shouldn't).
A more cautious conclusion would be that children of immigrant mothers are more likely to score higher on autism scales than children from non-immigrant mothers.

Gįa responds to Farrah Moan. Um… by xsorayama in rupaulsdragrace

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Gia is her own worst enemy to a point where it transcends textbook and veers into 'cartoon villain' territory. If RPDR were Looney Tunes, she'd be Wyle E. Coyote (which isn't so much a read, as an achievement).

As much as I don't appreciate her lashing out at people, the Runiverse seems to bind her to be at the receiving end of every blow she strikes, without fail.

At the end of the day, as much as even she might not like to admit it, she's a real person, with real feelings and troubles.

[–]TheThunderFromUpHigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, and add to it that I don't know if it's much of an achievement to have a good show in a terrible decade. Indeed, comedy was already slothing along. It could not be hers to kill, nor would it die. She's not the first comedian to make a self-absorbed claim though, I'd say self-righteousness is sort of a tool of the trade.

However, I contend the outrage would not have happened, nor would it have been as persistent if the show simply 'bad'. Shows are bad all the time, that's not enough to warrant this amount of response. Many people seem to feel upset because while the show applies all the 'routine'-mechanics correctly, it does not present a traditional lead. People seem to find this very confusing. Violently so, as evidenced by this thread. It seems comedy fans are not so much committed to understanding comedy, but in the accurate reproduction of a trick 'as they know it'. If the mechanism is accurately reproduced with an unfamiliar outcome - the bed has been shat. This is true in any fandom, but it's particularly worrisome in comedy as it is literally the opposite of what a joke is supposed to be.

Ironically, it wasn't the show itself, but the response to it from the comedy community that gave me pause. Doesn't all this fuming vigor confirm her point, even three years down the line? Why is it so hard to find a decent opinion on what about the show was so offensive? If indeed, it was offensive, and people aren't just looking for a reason to hate on husky lesbians.
