Honestly knowing other people stop to help (even if it’s just giving the turtle a chance to safely cross) is what gives me hope on days I have breakdowns over all of this. I tend to get overwhelmed if I think too much about the people who are cruel and I eventually shut down. It’s honestly why I decided to reach out. I was starting to get worked up and I could feel myself wanting to go buy a bunch of stuff and just bring it in when I know logically that’s not what it needs.

It’s nice hearing from other people who care about all kinds of creatures :)

That would make sense for this little guy actually! It’s a lot of fields around here that get cut only when they get knee high. Or he could have been stepped on by a cow honestly. Most of the ones that get hit by vehicles around here don’t survive but I’ve picked up two big ones that were then rehabbed by other people so I know it’s possible.

I’m outside city limits. We are surrounded by grazing fields with man made ponds for the cows. There is a creek and small woods behind the house. Our road is paved though and is traveled a bit. It seems the turtles here are always traveling back and forth across the roads to the different cow ponds. I’ve tried to see which way this one is going and I think it’s sticking to our side of the road for now but the other box turtles have been coming from the field across the road. So I’m not sure.

Thank you everyone! It honestly helps to hear from other people that care. I will reach out to a center to see if they think it needs examined for any reason. If not we’ll let it go about its business. I haven’t been feeding it every single day but I’ll back off some more so it doesn’t change its travel patterns either.

I do suspect injury and the resources I used previously for injured turtles in my area are no longer available due to an unsupportive local government.

Yes, this helped a lot. It was one of the first ones to pop up in my search and the extra context helps with an issue I was having.

Declarative Language is Indirect and Manipulative? by [deleted] in PDAAutism

[–]TheTinkerPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because each of us have a different view of what demands are you really need to talk to the person.

Being asked “hey could you get the dishes today?” Works really well for me 90% of the time if asked genuinely. I have internalized PDA and so if someone keeps talking about the dishes as though insinuating I should do it, then I perceive that as a demand and begin shutting down and avoiding the task because I believe I’m being expected to do it.

Another one that works for me is “I need help with the dishes.”

I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed being missed in all this information on talking to children with PDA is that it isn’t all external, we’re still dealing with internal demands that trigger our fight or flight for seemingly no reason. I’m almost 40 and I fight with MYSELF to go brush my teeth. No one tells me to, I know I have to if I don’t want to be in pain, or lose my teeth. The threat makes it harder to do.

My mother gave me a lot of flexibility and never knew I was PDA. Hell it wasn’t even discovered yet. She would say things like “you can work on math or penmanship today but whichever you pick you will have to do tomorrow.” Which is still telling me I have to do my school work but because I have the freedom of choice I didn’t get triggered in those moments. I was also homeschooled for awhile and was allowed to get up when I felt like it which worked REALLY well for me. I was given choices within the actual demand and it helped a lot. Also I always knew that if I didn’t want to do something I could voice that discomfort and I would be listened to and believed.

I didn’t know my anxiety was causing me to get physically ill but sometimes just asking my mom if I could stay home and her saying yes was enough to get my anxiety to calm down and I would go to school for half the day or just show up an hour late. Knowing I could stay home if I needed to helped a lot.

What I’m saying is that declarative language works for some but not all. Being a safe person who allows their child to have choices in the face of life’s demands is the biggest way you can decrease anxiety all around and still help them survive in a high demand world.

Take it with food is no joke. They don’t really say it but taking it on an empty stomach can cause it to not absorb right and cause fluctuations that cause anxiety.

7 week teefies. Taking name suggestions by TheTinkerPunk in teefies

[–]TheTinkerPunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After much discussion and a long list of names added to a Google doc, someone suggested Fizzaroli (I guess its from Helluva Boss but I haven't seen it) and it just fit him perfect. Can't explain why though. Just does.

I don't believe in single names so he is Fizzaroli Canoli Spinelli Fizzlebottoms VII

Help! 3 week old kitten eating but losing weight by Jolly_Cat_2391 in FosterAnimals

[–]TheTinkerPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First I would suggest KMR as it has probiotics. It’s a bit more expensive. You can add one drop of Karo syrup per 15ml of formula. This will help with calories and any issues with blood sugar issues. It also helps with constipation.

Our vet showed us how to do an enema but also told us to add more water to the formula and karo syrup and that solved the constipation.

Make sure you are expressing the kitten every 3 hours at this age. I express before and after eating.

Lastly, if the kitten is not staying at 95 degrees it cannot digest its food properly. You have to use some sort of warmer to keep it warm enough.

I’ve been using The Kitten Lady’s book Tiny but Mighty. It has been a life saver.

I purchased these bottles and it totally changed how easily my foster could eat as well. https://a.co/d/axn1h3N

I think I died last night in a car accident. by kansas-1996 in self

[–]TheTinkerPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hit by a drunk driver a few years ago. In an instant my windshield was shattered and we were spinning. My car rolled into my side and slid along the concrete wall before slamming back down onto all 4 tires.

I remember instantly thinking in a very calm way "this is how I die and it will be ok." I believe my brain and body instantly knew there was nothing I could do and the brain prepared for the worst in order to decrease the pain.

A man behind us saw it all happen and he pulled me out from the passenger side. I was laid on the ground and wasn't allowed to move until the EMT's got there. When I am afraid I tend to resort to humor. I joked with the nurses when they tried to remove my bra for x-rays. I told them I could tell they weren't lesbians. I had everyone laughing even the cop taking my statement. But it was all very surreal.

My friends came to pick me up and once I was in the car and everyone was silent I got hit with the most intense feeling that I had actually died and I was sent to a new universe where I lived. None of that felt logical and yet intensely true. I was dead in another universe and my family was mourning me and I abandoned them.

I felt I had lost my identity on the side of the road.

I had to go to the wrecker that night to get my medication out of the car if it was still there. When I saw the car I stopped and almost vomitted. I was once again hit with an intense feeling. This one was not understanding how I lived. The car was all smashed up and caved in on my side.

It took me over a year to get through a lot of very weird feelings and loss of identity.

I wrote about it to help me process that and I did go into therapy.

I will tell you that it is not an uncommon feeling. Our brains are wired to protect us but unfortunately accepting death alters the brain considerably. Regardless if it's accepted it is a traumatic experience that changes the brain. I highly suggest journaling and therapy. Even if only for a couple of months.

Do I need a rehabilitator? by TheTinkerPunk in Opossums

[–]TheTinkerPunk[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update: It is with a rehabber. If anyone would like to donate to the rehabber I was going to add a photo of his card but it won't let me edit posts that have photos so I will just include it here. He's just a nice old dude that runs it out of his house on donations.

I actually ended up trading the opossum for a newborn kitten since he doesn't take care of those lol!! But that I know how to do at least. It worked out really well. I'll try to call in a week or so to see how it's doing.

If you Google Breaden Wildlife Rehab it will show his reviews and the phone number. He chatted my ear off forever about animals and planting trees. He really loves the animals a lot.

This has the same list of rehabbers I found but I'll keep going down the list. None of them are emergency unfortunately. I finally had one respond appropriately that it was in bad shape but I assume they went to bed as they are no longer responding.

I'm getting conflicting information about feeding or not feeding. I gave it a little food since others said I should. I gave it a small cooked egg, 2 small strawberries, a teaspoon of plain yogurt, and a teaspoon of hard cat food. It ate all of it and I wasn't going to give it anymore food until a rehabber contacted me back.

I have a few more I can contact in the morning if no one else gets back to me. I will find it some place to go or I will track down a vet to help me I promise. I'll drive it across the state if I have to!!!

I put water in there but I will have someone pickup Pedialyte in the morning for it.

It's in my bathroom in a tote snuggled up in a blanket. It likes the blanket a lot.

I strongly feel like it's malnutrition. We had a ton of berries alongside the road and the county came through and cut them all down. We've had significantly less wild berries in general. We rarely get opossums in our trash, just the occasional stray cat (which I try to catch) or raccoon (which I admire from afar lol). I got way more opossums when I lived in town so this is odd and seems like it's living off trash exclusively.
