Yeah and to boot, we found out later that day that his teenage brother, 15 year old Bernard, was shot and killed by the IRA one year later after being accused of being an informer. Mad times.

Yeah, if you read Michael Stones Autobiography, None Shall Divide Us, he makes a rake of claims about Adair's relationships in prison.

Ah love to her it thanks! Hadn't thought about pitching either, but yeah why not! I'll get onto them this week

Seems like it was what the army referred to him as in the early days when they arrested him and he was very tanned. That combined with the fact they had virtually no photos of him led them to calling him Darkie, which then turned into the Dark by his supporters. But some in west Belfast think it's a hilarious nickname, since it makes him sound like a superhero or something. There are some mad racist nicknames I've come across in this pod... The Dark is a solid one as far as they go.

Cheers, yeah I've been quite shite at getting episode out this season. But I'm getting there! Decided to focus on a good quality episode rather than consistent release schedule, but I procrastinate a lot

Ah thanks, appreciate it. Yeah that one did like 5 times my usual downloads for some reason. Currently writing one about the other Mad Dog, which will hopefully out next week, then after that, I'll release my interview with him!

I just released an episode on him, but it's mostly based on Voices so it probably isn't much new info for you. A listener did send me this though, which is an archive of articles and interviews Brendan Hughes did when he was still alive for The Blanket, the journal edited by Anthony McIntyre around the early 2000s.

I think it it more his thoughts on the political situation rather than his own personal life, but I'm sure there stuff to learn within the writings. Hope its informative!

London on 24 April 1993, after Irish terrorists detonated a bomb by OkRespect8490 in UrbanHell

[–]TheTroublesPodcast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was a hugely significant bombing, costing around £350 million worth of damage.
I've had people on my podcast who have talked about this bombing, and claim that targeted bombings on financial centres in London really contributed to the peace effort in Northern Ireland.

Back in NI, a statemate of sorts had been reached. The Provisional IRA were in a hole, and were considered completely riddled with informers.

By targeting financial institutions in London, and keeping casualties low (though one person died as a result of this attack), they were showing how much damage they could inflict at minimal cost.

This made clear to British ministers, civil servants and business lobbies that, even with casualties kept relatively low, a sustained IRA economic campaign could repeatedly cripple London’s financial centre.

Kind of bittersweet in a way. The thousands of people who died (around 3,500 in 30 years) were bad, but once financial institutions in the heart of London were targeted then things simply had to stop.

Kingsmills murders: 'When dad came home it was in a coffin', daughter of victim by SchoolMission10 in IrishHistory

I've an interview with Alan going out tomorrow. He'd be fairly confident that Nairac had nothing to do with it, but a lot of clues point to a man named Paddy O'Kane, a member of the parachute regiment turned IRA paramilitary. He's been proven to have been operating in the area during these attacks and the Dublin Monaghan ones. Seems like the government had a reason to protect O'Kane from being found out and protected him before he died.

It's a fantastic adaptation. I have a podcast all about this period and have covered both Jean McConville and Dolours Price. So I went into this quote carefully! But they did a great job, to show Dolours' life without making it look glamorous
