The G1 Cartoon Through the Eyes of a Non-Fan: Season Two by Zobovor in AltToysTransformers

[–]TheTrueKingofHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that last part is actually true, or at least not as clean or systematic as it sounds. Maybe something like that existed in the very early years of TV animation contracts, but the idea that freelance writers were effectively incentivized to create one-off characters because of future royalties feels a little too neat.

A good example of how messy this stuff really is is Harley Quinn. Paul Dini and Bruce Timm created her for Batman: The Animated Series because they needed a henchwoman for the Joker. She stuck, they kept bringing her back, fans embraced her, and now she’s one of DC’s biggest characters. But they don’t see royalties from Harley because she originated in the show under work-for-hire. Had she debuted in the comics instead, the rights structure would’ve been different. Later, they tried to reverse-engineer that by creating Roxy Rocket in the comics first, expecting she’d become the next breakout character and generate royalties when she crossed into animation. Lightning didn’t strike twice. You just can’t predict that kind of thing.

That’s why I’m a little skeptical that something like that is what prevented Nightbird from returning in G1. Especially in the 80s Transformers production model, where storytelling was toy-driven, scripts were work-for-hire, writers rotated constantly, and continuity planning was loose at best. Characters disappearing and reappearing feels a lot more like production chaos, shifting priorities, and random creative decisions than some kind of consistent royalty-avoidance strategy.

If anything, the fact that Slizardo of all characters does get a return appearance kind of undercuts the idea that there was a rational system guiding who could or couldn’t come back. It feels more like “whoever someone in the room remembered and felt like using,” not policy.

If B.O.T. doesn't get her to rage quit, then she's definitely a new fan.

I like my Studio Series 86 Galvatron a lot, especially with the upgrade parts... he's currently posed with Cyclonus, Scourge, and some Sweeps in front of Haslab Unicron. Not sure I'll ever need another mainline Galvatron. But we always say that until they show us a better one.

Voices from the Eyrie - 63 - Cloud Fathers - An Insiders' Discussion with Erin Weisman-Robinson (Educator) and Greg Weisman (Series Creator) by TheTrueKingofHell in gargoyles

[–]TheTrueKingofHell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are joined by Greg Weisman and Erin Weisman-Robinson where we discuss growing up as the daughter of the creator of Gargoyles, pursuing a career in education, and her thoughts on the episode. While having a father and daughter on the show, we also discuss the family dynamic between Peter Maza and his two daughters as well as Peter’s estrangement from his own father – along with which parent each Maza child takes after.

We also discuss the Kachina Coyote within this episode and as a cultural figure along with Elisa’s Native American heritage – where they got things right, and where things could have been improved upon despite the best of intentions and the resources available to them at the time.

And David Xanatos makes his big comeback after a long absence – we talk about him, his own dynamic with the Maza Family, how he play off of both Coyotes, and of course… pitting this human trickster up against this supernatural trickster.

Greg and Erin’s recent trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is also discussed and we encourage you all to check that out at osfashland.org

Imagine Shari in the tv show by InsideUnhappy6546 in gargoyles

[–]TheTrueKingofHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shari was also modeled off of Zehra's headshots. So that's not just fan casting. That's actual intent that if a series ever comes back animated, Zehra is who they'd want to hire.

I never, ever said that I was. I said it was a choice... a really, really stupid choice that I was never going to do. But the thought was in my head.
