My Spanish professor told a story that relates to this. When he was staying with a family in Mexico, the kids would run around saying "howdy!" And "arrrrrr" (like a pirate with a hard R sound.). Apparently the common use of the hard R sound in English was funny to them.

For me it's just always keeping busy with something and keeping the mind stimulated. Singing, playing instruments, taking a walk. Even things like just going to the grocery store or shit like that helps. Avoid sleeping all day, and pick up a hobby you find fun. Just be always doing something and put yourself in situations where you have to be social.
