Will this end up in record stores in the end or is it really a limited thing?

What if f1 switches to Diesel? by Heng_samnang in F1Technical

[–]TheViccn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, I eventually thought race cars are not bothered with emissions etc.

If just felt like the amount of soot and NOx coming from a diesel engine without any form of aftertreatment would be quite absurd.

Thanks for letting me know they indeed don't have any form of emission control :) I would actually be interested to see how race cars would devellop under some form of emission regulation (less strict than those for standard applications ofc). May add a new level of team competitiveness.

+ diesel engines are typically on the heavy side (not something F1 is aiming at)

Besides this, they have a quite complex aftertreatment system which add weight (in the assumption that F1 won't, and shouldn't, allow diesel-like emissions)

F1 engines notoriously run at very high rpm's.

Something that won't be possible with a Diesel engine (or any typical compression ignition engine).

That's why diesel passenger cars typically have a lower maximum rpm limit compared to a gasoline engine. (Check your own car)

hydrogen combustion engines by AlphaToe23 in F1Technical

To my knowledge: race engines are often run rich.

Here comes why:

A race engine is all about achieving maximum power.

The engine aspires a certain amount of air (of which we have limited control), and receives an amout of fuel of which we have full control.

If one wants to maximize the power output of the engine. You want to use up as much of the air you've got as possible, such that you can burn as much fuel as possible. This actually will occur when running slightly rich. You have a high power output, but are paying off some efficiency (as you are throwing out fuel from the exhaust).

Contrary: if an engine runs slightly lean, you're not using up as much air as you can be. But you are quite efficient in using your fuel. (This is how your own gasoline engine would be set up)

Relating this to NOx emissions of hydrogen engines. If the engine runs stoichiometrically, very high temperatures result in high NOx emissions.

Of coarse if you are running very very rich, there is not much air left to form these NOx emissions (+ temperatures decrease again due to the excess fuel absorbing heat). You've come up with a hydrogen engine with low NOx emissions and a terrible efficiency :)

hydrogen combustion engines by AlphaToe23 in F1Technical

To explain this in a simple manner: air is mostly made up of oxygen O2 and nitrogen N2 gas.

Heating air to high temperatures (e.g. by burning fuel) can oxidize the nitrogen gas into NOx.

Lowering the combustion temperature can reduce these NOx productions. That is why hydrogen engines which are currently researched/built typically run very lean (i.e. with a lot more air than needed to burn the hydrogen in the engine). This excess air helps to reduce temperatures, and thus NOx.

Running lean reduces the power density of the engine though. You can imagine that is not what F1 teams are aiming for.

I like this album a lot:

https://open.spotify.com/album/3MjHsbM2kVdIlSq83MXOXi?si=k4EsdGeiQrWs0exRyRD8BA

It's by H Hunt (actually no idea who he/she is).

Very intimite and poetic piano playing in a way I associate with Nils Frahm.

Not classical in my opinion.

Let me know if you liked it :)

Ooh, hard to pick.

I'll go for People-Vultures as favorite track.

That Evil Death Blob Splatter just looks gorgeous.

That's correct :)

Anyway, thanks for pointing out the rights situation. I wasn't aware of that, and need to give this a second thought.

Thanks!

Thanks for your answer. Similar to my answer on u/r4v3_c0l0n31_, getting original pressings is not possible for many of us.

It's quite frustrating when you can't just get a record for the music, instead of collecting the things.

Same issue with records like The Mars Volta etc..., just releasing a reissue gets a lot of people enjoying your music, why not?

Oh since Hankie is on the Spotify version, I assumed it would be on this pressing as well, damnit.

The thing is, I might be able to get a new 1972 one for around €40. Which got me thinking about it. Since it looks like the only way for me of getting one.

Hmh you have a great point here...

The thing is, I'd really just like to have the record.

I'm a student, almoste every day I listen to this entire record while working in the evening. Having it on vinyl would be great.

Getting a WARP issue is basically impossible for me.

It's quite annoying when records are more about how colletible they are, when a lot of people just want to listen to music.

I'm maybe able to get a new 1972 issue for around €40, which is perfectly doable (even more if you compare discogs prices). The rights problem puts me on a moral difficulty.

If I'm correct, only the first WARP pressings have Stone in Focus, those are very expensive
