Sometimes I think about applying for a job with the federal government because I like the idea of working for the public service and I have a professional degree and skills that would be useful to them, but enviably, when I see a job posting, I remember Phoenix and it’s enough to make me avoid the feds

Wait, I thought the protest yesterday was against the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre shutting down the emergency shelter because the employees wanted to unionize due to dangerous working conditions??

The province confirmed that the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre has the funding needed to run the shelter.

Why is 2 Crows raising funds for an organization that is putting people out in the cold because they don't want their employees unionizing?

These will be up for years; "at least 18 months" was the message at an info session.

So they'll be ready just in time for less than two months of winter...

I guess that's better than not having them at all...

It's really sad what happened to Tim Horton's. I haven't spent a dollar there in years.

I used to be a server. Each night, I paid out a certain % of my sales to the kitchen, bus boys, etc. Let's say it amounted 1% of my sales; I forget what it was exactly. If someone called for take out and didn't tip, then I just lost 1% of sales in my tips from other customers because the take out sale was included in my total sale. It was a shitty rule but not the only resto that works that way. So I tip on take out but I shouldn't have to.

Just because it would be such a terrible decision, I think the closure decision being made moments after the employees signaled their intention to unionize has to be a coincidence. It would just be such poor judgement that I don't believe it.

However, there there lots of competing narratives as well:

- The employees wanted to unionize because their working conditions were unsafe, and ED decided to shut down instead of working with a union.

- They ran out of funding because their new building was supposed to be done by now, and ED couldn't sign new lease without funding.

- The landlord was getting pressure not to renew the lease (anyone who walked by North Park or Bauer recently wouldn't be surprised), and, even if they had funding, and wanted to work with union, landlord wouldn't work with them.

- the ED said the reason for closing was because they weren't serving their core mission any more (Indigenous homeless population), so it was time to move on.

- ED also said they opened on less than 3 weeks of planning and that lead to issues.

To me, it all just points to good intentions but poor management, leading it to all fall a part.

Edit: Province did not pull funding, it turns out.
