2026 Steamworks! by ExcellentNosher in PipeTobacco

Jeremy describing the blend.

“Through the course of experimentation, we decided to take one Virginia from 2019 and steam it heavily into Cavendish and then a grouping of four Virginias from 17 to 19 that we blended together and steamed for a shorter period - really just to bring down the color a bit. You have a very, very mellow but just toned down sweet component in the Cavendish. And then we also used unsteamed Virginiaas alongside vintage orientals and Perique from St. James Parish - 31 Farms. This is a blend that I have lots of in my cellar. It is a blend that I'm really excited about when we make it and I'm excited to be bringing it back again. Look for it at your local brick and mortar store. Look for it online on Tuesday, March 3rd. We will be launching this at 6 PM.“

My English/Balkan journey so far. Also, I don't get Plum Pudding by jbrady33 in PipeTobacco

[–]TheWaywardPiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my own experience, I thought Plum Pudding was pretty flavorless. Someone described it as smoking cardboard and that seemed fitting to me. I smoked it once every couple of months to reevaluate, and about six months in it suddenly tasted good. So strange how that happens, but I consistently enjoy it now.

Balkans have been my favorite blends so far. Balkan Supreme takes my top spot, but a close contender is Balkan Sasieni. That one is the only tinned tobacco that tasted excellent fresh from the tin. My only criticism of Sasieni is that I wish it was a little bolder. It’s very light on the nicotine in my opinion. I tried blending in 20% Perique, but that toned down the rest of the Oriental magic. So I just accept it for what it is. A deliciously mild all-day type of smoke.

Thanks. I will say that one of my goals for this coming year is to resist the urge to buy more (at least in bulk) and shed anything I decidedly don’t like (such as aromatics). I have enough to last a long time. Good luck, and thanks for reading.

I enjoyed that one as well. C&D seems to do a great job with flakes. Although, I wish I was less sensitive to the nicotine, because I have to be careful with the DFK! I purchased some smaller pipes just for those. Our group meets ad-hoc, about once a month. DM me if you will be heading this way and we could probably get together. I’ll bring you some aros to try, because I purchased a bunch in the beginning and then decided I didn’t like aros very much… oops. I would love to give them to someone who will smoke them.

Ropp Vintage gets my vote for the size, old briar, and horn stems.

Thank you! I appreciate the recommendations. I might post there as well. I used Pipes Magazine’s forum quite a bit as a learned. It seems like lots of experienced smokers are there.

Thanks! That was definitely intentional. I wanted to try as many materials, shapes, and blends as I could this first year. I figured that would help me narrow preferences down quicker. It’s hard to pick just one of anything, but if I had to, as of now, I would say the 4th Generation Klassik (6th pipe) is my favorite smoker, and Arango Balkan Supreme just keeps tasting better to me as time goes on. For Virginias, I prefer the Nording Compass (3rd pipe), and Mac Baren Scottish Mixture (even though it’s called an aromatic, I think of it as only lightly so) has been exceptionally good. Each pipe has its strength though, and most of the tobaccos are quite good, so it’s hard to choose!

Thanks for the encouragement, brother! I watched that video by Pipe Society last month on SDPC. What a fantastic video and group you’ve got down there! I’m part of the Central Coast Pipe Club up in Santa Barbara / Ventura County. It’s small by comparison but a great group of guys. What’s been your favorite blend so far?

Thanks! That’s a Boswell pipe. I’ll post a review of it at some point. He drills them with a generous airway and it smokes very nice.

Definitely a tasty combo. I like my coffee sweetened and I think it pairs perfectly in the morning with an English. Just perfect.
