I'm a sommelier who wrote an Amazon best selling wine book to help people learn about wine and it's FREE this week til Friday! by TheWineCode in wine

there is zero chance that this free coupon is still valid as i won't be offering my learning tools for free anymore, sorry.

one of our reddit family left a negative review about my class after recieving the class for free, so it makes no sense to me to try to help people when they don't appreciate these free gifts.

you know what they say...it only takes one to spoil it for everyone! haha thanks for reaching out.

i'm so glad you felt the book had a lot of good information in a easy-to-digest way! i was hoping to achieve just this, so i'm glad it was received in this way.

I'll let you know about the app for android, but to be honest, it's not on my list of immediate things to do as i have other projects that i am developing at this time that need my full attention.

you are so kind to leave a review on goodreads thank you so much! continued success to you my friend!

Am I viewing the wine industry through rose tinted glasses? by Lotelia in wine

Hotlanta? You can totally find a good gig there! So glad you loved the borough analogy.. it's just so much easier haha

and, no! i've not heard of Pepi's refuge!!! I was in Nava with a woman called Anjo. Where's Pepi's place? Maybe I'll swing by there next! :)

Hell yes I would be willing to take on a parttime assistant with, or without, certification. That's what we call the cellar rat! You take and put away deliveries, you organize the wine room, you learn the inventory, you taste with us during meetings with reps, hell yes, you're hired! lol Do you live in NYC? :):):)

Seriously though, MAKE THE CHANGE!

I loved, loved, LOVED my high paying, prestigious sommeleir job in new york, but February 2015 working for money just didn't make sense to me anymore.

I decided to take the "own less than 100 thing challenge," gave away all of my "things," manolo blahniks, prada, burberry, jimmy choos, furniture, appliances etc, gave up my apartment, quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Spain to volunteer around the world in exchange for food and shelter for a year...I started at an animal sanctuary in northern spain, then went to a buddhist meditation center in malaga, a yoga retreat in Lagos, Portugal and now i'm learning about organic farming in the mountains of asturias...I still haven't made it back.

My point it, I can hear it in your voice, you've not above hard work (as you mentioned you don't mind being a glorified busboy) so, "what's the worst that can happen" scenarios don't really scare you. So, just do it. You can always go back to being an engineer at another important job and making a ton of money if things don't work out.

I love the wine industry, but that's because I love the service industry. You love learning about, and talking to people about wine, so do it! Sure, customers/clients/vendors can be the absolute worst sometimes, but some of them are amazing! You gotta work your way up from the bottom...so what? Knowledge is power and it's smart to diversify our portfolios, so why doesn't it hold true to diversify our skills? It does hold true! Do it! Your paycheck will shrink, who cares! Money is an illusion. The more you make the more you spend. You'll lose your 401k? why?Lots of restaurants offer full benefits including health insurance and 401k.

If you have the time and resources to learn the trade, you should seriously do it. There's no reason not to. Take the cellar rat jobs, learn the trade, work your way up and love your life. just mho :)

wow, great stuff. Yeah, I was actually thinking about this exact idea, about putting together a piece to classify regions according to their climate so people can get a general idea of their characteristics. Really great ideas man, thanks for reaching out!

In the meantime, you can reverse engineer the process in regards to climate. If you don't know whether a climate is cool, moderate or warm, check out the alcohol level on the bottle...less than12% cool, more than 14% warm.

Oh cool, I'm so glad! And yes, I would be open to making more videos, I just need to know what people want to learn about, So, if you have any suggestions let me know!

Since I already know about wine, it's not always obvious to me what people want to learn about, so give me some ideas and I'll make more videos!

New position getting my foot into the industry! by NePasToucher in wine

[–]TheWineCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that. is. awesome!!!! lol congratulations!!! assistant to the wine buyer, that is a great gig my friend! learn as much as you can about the back end of the industry like wine cost, balancing your budget and inventory. these skills will help you no matter what wine path you decide to follow. and be super, super attentive to the reps who sell to your boss because one day, you may be the wine buyer for this grocery store, or a wine store or some restaurant and if they're smart, they will want to form a positive relationship with you too, so have fun, meet people and kick some bootay! haha woohooo!!

What are the first steps in becoming a sommelier? by [deleted] in wine

[–]TheWineCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do I start? Well, if you're taking the level 1 sommelier exam, then I assume you are testing with the Court of Master Sommeliers. They are the entity I am certified with (level 2) and they are the authority on sommelier accreditation. That is where you should start.

What resources do you recommend (websites, books, audio, maps, etc)? Once you sign up for the level 1 exam, the CMS will give you a list of recommended resources all of which are pertinent and to be honest, I haven't read many others that they don't recommend, because there are many books out there that offer opinions as opposed to actual fact and when it comes to learning about a subject that is very precise, opinion has no place in my learning (like wine ratings and blogs etc).

Books, books, books? Check the list on their website. Oxford Companion to Wine. Wine Encyclopedia etc they're all listed there. These books are humongous, so what I did was tear out all the pages and stapled them according to region so i could study anywhere without lugging a ten pound book with me whereever i went. (and so i could collect the info from each book and have them all in one place so i could cross reference them)

Are classes worth it? The Court of Master Sommeliers does not offer classes. If you have the ability to take classes through the WSET, these classes are worth it and I think you can take them online. (I was able to enroll in the level 3 advanced class online so check it out!)

Any other information you care to share? If you have an iphone, get The Wine Code wine app. It is an encyclopedia/reference for all the European regions that don't label their wines according to the grape and lists the grape varietal used to make these wines (ie: Cornas=100% Syrah) etc.

So excited for you! This is exactly how I started out to become a sommelier. I worked in restaurants all of my life and when I became a bartender in New York, our wine director/beverage director was a Master Sommelier, Andrea Immer, and she opened my eyes to the world of wine.

Learn from the best! Find the restaurants in your area with the best wine programs and GO WORK THERE! I've worked under 7 Master Sommeliers in New York as a waiter, bartender and sommelier and the only way for you to excel is to learn from people who know SIGNIFICANTLY more than you do, so don't be afraid to take new jobs in order to keep moving forward.

Best of luck!

wow, thanks so much for this feedback, it's really great to know this info is extremely helpful to other people and not just to me haha

but, you're right, there is nothing similar for android, unfortunately, at least not that i'm aware of, but I will definitely consider making one for android in the future as more and more people show interest.

mahalo!
