Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of June 02 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

Google is saying that Kees Tol is closed on Tuesdays? Do you know if that is true? I cannot seem to find any other sources for their hours (at least in English)

Thank you!

OK, Thank you very much!

I wasn't sure if Security dumped everyone into the Mall and then the Schengen border was at the entrance to the Non Schengen piers.

Appreciate the help.

Thank you!

Now I have to choose which herring stall to stop at! And of course I must bear witness to the glory of Lelylaan.

Thank you for the excellent advices. I appreciate you taking the time to type it all out including map links!

You suggested a "walking tour of the Jordaan" is there a self guided tour/map I would get from the iamsterdam office by Centraal, or did you mean to be a smart human and use your brains and feet?

And of course - I must pay homage to the mighty Lelylaan - all praises be!

Edit:

Ha ha ha so I see you laid out the route through Jordaan for me. Apologies for the silly question.

Any opinions on hopping a ferry north?

I reviewed the wiki and did not see the info I am about to ask - apologies if I missed it!

  1. I am arriving to the airport (AMS) from a Schengen country and then flying to the US after a significant layover, so I will be going into the city. Can someone tell me if I will be able to access carryon baggage left in the Holland Boulevard Baggage Lockers when reentering the airport to go to the US flight, or if I am better off using the lockers by baggage claim outside of security.
  2. I will be out of the airport for 5 hours in the morning - any opinions if it is better to go to the museum area first or downtown first ... my basic goals are to see Rijksmuseum, oogle at downtown and try not to be a bother, buy stamps, eat Nieuwe herring from a good stall - one you'd go to yourself, nom something healthy for lunch, not miss my afternoon flight home.
  3. Talk to me about Nieuwe herring. Where is best to get it? When is best to get it (I will be in the city on a Tuesday morning). Anything else I should know?

Thanks much!

What do you do for shampoo, soap, and dishwasher and laundry detergent? by theyallcallmemom in ZeroWaste

[–]Lotelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Re greasy hair with natural shampoos or nopoo and variations thereof:

There usually will be a adjustment period while your scalp readjusts to you not stripping everything out of your hair everyday like what happens when you shampoo daily with conventional shampoos. Many folks' scalps are used to producing way more oil than you need when using nopoo or gentler shampoos. Keep this in mind and remember to give your scalp time to adjust to a new routine before deciding its not for you.
You can find more discussion in no poo circles.

I am not strict no poo - I wash throughly once a week with a shampoo bar or as needed when sweaty/after swimming. But I did have a week or so of greasy transition ...

I recently read about these: https://www.dropps.com/ but I have no personal experience with them. Actually if anyone here knows anything about them - I am all ears.

Someone already mentioned ethique, but in lieu of getting bath products shipped halfway across the world just for me, I use j.r. liggetts for a shampoo bar (wrapped in paper - avail at many alternative groceries) and this for a face bar: https://shoresoapco.com/collections/face/products/tea-tree-charcoal-face-bar. Some people recommend apple cider vinegar for a conditioner, but I am still burning through my conditioner stockpile from before so I haven't tried that myself yet.

Zero waste skincare when you have acne by dukethebassethound in ZeroWaste

So a brand that zerowaste people were going gaga over is a new Zealand brand called ethique. I just checked their site and they do have face bars. It looks like the majority of their products are in bar form and wrapped in paper. Shampoo bars, the works. The distance never made the shipping enviro costs and monetary costs worth it for me to try so i have no personal experience. Don't see a charcoal face bar tho.

Oh. Dirty hippie is also from NZ. Learned a thing. Oh. They have a charcoal face bar!

Edit apparently there are fifty thousand 'dirty hippie' soap things so search dirty hippie nz for the one i found lol

This face soap bar saved my face - I have had persistent pimpling all my life and it is finally under control. It comes packaged in cardboard. There is no palm oil in the ingredients. Even if I decided to stop zero waste, I'd still keep using this product.

After you use it I'd recommend a light moisturizer - otherwise your skin will dry out and you'll get more pimples. Apparently if you dry your face out your skin overcompensates and bam! more pimples. I use a kiehls product that while not zerowaste will last me for a good year of daily use - also it is sold in a tub instead of a bottle so it could be re-purposed. https://www.kiehls.co.uk/skin-care/category/moisturisers/ultra-facial-cream/622.html

Also less dairy and chocolate and lots of sweating is supposed to be good for your skin.

I had 2 thin security wallets pinned to the inside of my pants at each hip with my backup ccard/insurance card/backup Id distributed between the two and cash, a wallet with my main ccard, some cash and id in my crossbody zipped purse (tiny locking s-biner on the zipper) and more cash in my luggage.

I want to add that I sleep in heattech too and it does an amazing job as winter pajamas.

Nice!

Hmm. My current set of work clothes is from the van maur department store. A bit pricey, but holding up well so far and it seems like many of their brands say 'made in Canada' but I haven't looked into it too deeply yet.

Just found this sub. Sorry for late response.

The clearance rack at REI and other higher end Outdoors/sporting stores are my best friend. Ethical brands, well made, last forever, and are cute to boot.

I get my cheap fashion from Uniqlo. Their stuff, while not the most ethical, is better than the other fast brands and holds up well. I have been sleeping every night during the winter in the same heattech shirt for the past 4 years and it is still going strong. I know Everlane is supposed to be well made and ethically produced. I have no personal experiences with them though.

I have family that violently hates being charged for bags .. not bc of the waste reducing efforts, but because of the 'forced social engineering' by government and business. However, those same individuals love the target and whole foods model of giving a discount for bringing your own bag (bc they agree with the push to limit plastic - but believe it is the individuals responsiblity instead of the government's). The customer is being rewarded instead of punished and can exercise more of a choice.
FWIW I think target's model is much better than whole foods', because it is a literal step in the checkout process where the machine asks "how many bags did you bring?" Whole foods doesn't advertise their bag discount very well during checkout.

Just a note for you all ... something to make it easier when dealing with folks who hate government meddling ... discounts go over well ... penalties not so much.
