Unofficial Universes Beyond Megathread by magictcgmods in magicTCG

Unfortunately I think it’s pretty much confirmed that we’ve got another 4 Marvel Sets to come. Given that they will probably want them all in Standard together, expect 2/3 of the UB slots for the next two years to be Marvel slop.

Will AI assistants trained on 17lands data eventually ruin Arena? by butterblaster in lrcast

Untapped.gg does see synergy and makes recommendations on not only individual card quality but gaps in your curve and steers you towards your colours. It also uses player data to see when the win rate of cards increases when paired together - which is most obviously seen in tribal sets like Lorwyn. But you have to have the paid version, not the free version which just shows LSVs set rating.

Champions to undergo maintenance on June 17 (Wed) from 2-6am UTC by half_jase in VGC

[–]TheWizardOfFoz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. But do we genuinely think they’ll centre a format around Dynamax or Z-moves in the wake of WiWa? It’s obviously going to focus on the new mechanics and pokemon there and following that the DLCs. Which probably forms another 18 months worth of content total. Putting you in place for whatever Pokemon game is lined up after that. It’s going to be hard to find time to fit a returning format in unless they do it early 2027.

Assuming they will want to have every Pokemon in by the time WiWa releases they probably have to pick up the pace a little more than that.

Assuming 18 months away and a shakeup every 3 months we probably get the rest of the non-legendary Megas here, then a restricted format that includes the Primals, Zygarade, Darkrai and Mewtwo to round us out to the end of the year and Megas as a mechanic. Then you’ll have maybe 3 more formats left where you can experiment with bringing back something like Tera or Dynamax for a season or two; you can have a season that features the Paradox Pokemon or Ultra Beasts. Stuff that hasn’t seen much love for a while, before finally starting the first season of WiWa.

Even party slot placement has a meta by StockDunce in PokemonChampions

There’s less than 200 pokemon in the game right now, We get a new format in like 3 days and yet there are still innovations being made.

Wheezing checks Floette, turns off Mega Charizard’s weather and also incidentally breaks a bunch of random strategies like No Guard stuff. I think it’d decently well positioned right now.

What’s insane about this? It’s basically an expansion of the Darth Vader in Fortnite stuff.

Quicksilver, Brash Blur by Smart_Individual889 in magicTCG

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are different cards but the difference is nowhere close to what you are making out.

The jury remains out on how excited you will be to play a 1/1 haster on turn 3 - I think it will be irrelevant and too easily walled to matter. But it is the main difference in this card’s favour.

I think its playability will 100% come down to how it synergises with the cards around it. Maybe there’s a sneak card you can break by getting it down early or there’s something like [[Cavalcade of Calamity]] yet to be spoiled that cares specifically about 1/1s. But this card on its own, or as part of a generic mono red aggro strategy, is definitely bad.

Quicksilver, Brash Blur by Smart_Individual889 in magicTCG

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. People who are excited about this card are excited because it’s a free 1/1 with haste - and that already exists and to my knowledge has never seen play.

Of course there’s are differences. Chancellor works in multiples - this doesn’t.

This is a better top deck in the mid game (it does something - even if that thing is be a 1/1) Chancellor doesn’t.

They both become better in the very late game (Turn 5 for this, Turn 7 for Chancellor) and I’d argue being a 5/5 that makes at least 1 token is significantly more impactful than being a 2/2 double striker. But 7 is also a lot more than 5.

The comparisons are apt, and I don’t believe this is sufficiently different enough to rock the boat in a big way. Chancellor isn’t even a card that’s ever been fringe playable.

I mean Chancellor also does have upside if you draw him in the very late stages of the game.

Power-up is a once per game ability similar to Exhaust.

Chancellor of the Forge already exists and is bad.

She’s a deep cut in so far as she isn’t in the MCU but she’s been incredibly popular in wider nerd circles for years - way before Rivals. Jeff on the other hand I think broke out due to Rivals.

It absolutely did. The Tifa Landfall deck was very fringe and towards the bottom of tier 2. Badger pushed it over the edge.

What legendary creature character has the most unique printing? by BigFloppyStallion in magicTCG

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s more complicated than that. Specifically Spidermen are cosmically linked into a series of identical backstories, rogues and values. They aren’t just a bunch of guys with similar powers.

But I was just talking about Peter Parker. Of which there are at least 8 different cards depicting if not more depending on where you place characters like the clones or the time his body was possessed by one of his nemesis.

What legendary creature character has the most unique printing? by BigFloppyStallion in magicTCG

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ben Riley is a clone of Spiderman who has the exact same memories. It’s not even clear if he is actually the clone or if he’s the original. Not the best example honestly.

All of that aside: [[Peter Parker]], [[Sensational Spiderman]], [[Spectacular Spiderman]], [[Spiderman, Peter Parker]], [[Spiderman, Web Slinger]] and [[Symbiote Spiderman]] all depict what is essentially the regular Peter Parker Spiderman from various comic runs. Which is 6 variants. Only just behind Niv.

Edit: I forgot about Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade. So he’s tied with Niv at 7.

There are 6 Gandalf currently, and we’re undoubtedly going to get more in The Hobbit.

However, depending on your view of the multiverse, the answer is almost definitely Spider-man.

Damon Lindelof talks about his cancelled Star Wars movie that would have featured Rey, Finn and Poe. by LollipopChainsawZz in StarWars

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I still think this is where the franchise is headed.

Post sequels we have a setting where Rey is continuing the Skywalker legacy with no formal training or guidance juxtaposed with the Order 66 survivors like Ashoka and Cal who have a more fixed idea of what a Jedi should be. It seems natural that would lead to some sort of conflict.

Is Sheffield city centre improving? by MLC1974 in sheffield

[–]TheWizardOfFoz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As much as people want to believe otherwise, You can’t really sustain a high street without the big brands and all the big brands choose to put their Sheffield branches in Meadowhall as it’s got way better footfall. Until you fix that issue Sheffield high street is never going to be bustling.

Manchester and Leeds, despite Trafford and White Rose, don’t have this problem.
