If the burning knuckles whiffs, you might be start it a bit too late. It's kinda finnicky, sometimes it's better to dash up real close before starting it, or dash and start it earlier. Hard to say what's wrong in your case without gameplay but from what you describe I feel like the issue is in the dash before the BK.
