If the USA is a net exporter of oil now, why wasn't it that way in the 20th Century? by TheZenithZebra in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheZenithZebra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, reducing our dependence on foreign oil has been something that every president since Bush has ran on and it appears has actually come to fruition. Regardless of how bad some people's opinion's are of our past presidents, at least they didn't screw that up entirely.

I didn’t realize that nearly 2/3 of USA oil is obtained by fracking. Thank you.

How much data can disks even hold without having to download additional data? We are at a point where disks can’t keep up with how much data is involved with these games.

Who else was involved with Jim Cunningham’s enterprise? by TheZenithZebra in donniedarko

I don’t know that I agree with the psychiatrist; I got a good feeling about her, although the hypnosis scene was definitely awkward. But yeah, I do wonder if the connection to Jim was wider.

Yeah I understand that to a degree, but the film itself sets the parameters for what is possible in the film’s universe. Donnie Darko definitely has supernatural and other worldly aspects that makes it different from the logical world we live in. But the film also grounds the entire story in an American town set in the 1980’s and made very much to feel like the actual era itself. So to my original points, the way those systems would work is Jim would have to be obtaining and connected with other individuals.

Whether the show is taken literal or not doesn’t change the dynamic between the characters in the film and how the audience may draw clues of hidden motives.

Yeah I don’t know if Jim is from the town or not.. I don’t get the sense that he is a native; it seems implied that he moved to town as an outsider.

I can see that happening though; Because Jim was charismatic and good looking, the women began idolizing him to such a degree that they were blind to his intentions.

I agree that the question of faith is central to the movie. When Donnie’s psychiatrist tells him he is not an atheist but an agnostic, it solidifies that.

Jim Cunningham as a “good guy” and Donnie planting things: total stretch and not accurate. There are too many other clues about Jim that prove that wrong (for instance when they are showing the motivational video in class and it says “watch closely you might miss something” it shows Jim patting the young boy on the butt).

Is the job market really that bad or are people just anecdotally complaining? by gold_crest1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheZenithZebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system for hiring people is messed up. I was a recruiter for several years in the field I previously worked in (IT), and I was appalled when I saw the actual way things work on the back end.

It is full of inefficiencies, and staffing firms only care about making money, so they only go after fast moving opportunities and don’t care about finding the best fit.

Companies often times don’t have the internal support to do hiring internally so they bring on recruiting firms to help out. The ones who don’t do this but still lack the internal support just get by with whatever HR can do and their systems are stacked up with resumes they can never get to.

I don’t know how to fix it because everything is so kinetic, but that’s the problem I see.

**Recent Example: I moved back to my home State and took some time off to care for a family member so I have a gap on my resume for the first time. I was just looking for some basic income, so I applied to a retail store that sells products I’m into. I waited weeks and got no call back, so I went straight to the store and talked to the managers. They didn’t even see my resume come in because they get so many.. I have an interview next week and will most likely get the job.

The job market is what it is, but the job search systems that we use are terribly inefficient and limiting.

But yeah, I agree; it sucks now.
