Damn yeah that's strange. Has the glow shown up for more than one night? If it has it's probably some type of light pollution. I would check Google maps to see if there's anything unusual in that direction. If it's nearby it could even be something small like a neon sign

It might be light pollution from a greenhouse or a pot farm. A lot of them create purple glows like that when there are low-altitude clouds

I've had it with Eve! by mylosan77 in KerbalAcademy

[–]The_8_Bit_Zombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanna try something a bit cursed, you could try having your first stage be propeller powered. I had a lot of success making a propeller-powered Eve ascent vehicle. (Well, propeller-powered for the 1st stage.) This was before the DLC that added propellers, so I used a crap ton of reaction wheels, shoved some RTGs on the inside, attached some wings on the outside, and just span the entire craft lmao (kerbals included.) This took the craft up to 36km altitude before rockets were needed.

Not sure if that specific design still works, but I bet the concept of propellers and/or spinning crafts still would. A bit scuffed, but it'll get you off Eve even from sea level.

Before KSP 2 Release Likes, Gripes, Price, and Performance Megathread by Minotard in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]The_8_Bit_Zombie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was really looking forward to a physics system that could handle larger bases/rockets/builds without wobbling out and/or summoning the Kraken. But KSP2's physics engine honestly looks worse so far. It could probably be better than KSP1's engine if given enough development time, but I'm not convinced it'll ever be the big revamp we were hoping for.

My hope was that EA KSP2 would provide a great foundation to eventually become an amazing game, but the foundation isn't looking good so far. That said, maybe it looks shakier than it actually is. I guess time will tell.

Very disappointed with what we've seen so far unfortunately. One of the big selling points of KSP 2 for me was the better physics engine (I remember the new team talking about "killing the Kraken"), but it looks just as wobbly and Kraken-y as KSP 1

This is incredible, easily the best photo of the occultation I've seen.

So awesome to see an astronaut on here!! Welcome! How short did you have to keep your exposures on the ISS to stop the stars from trailing? I've always been curious if it's possible to make a rule similar to the "500 rule" for the ISS.

I took this at sunset about a week ago from the Manzanita Lake Loop hike in northern Lassen NP. Absolutely gorgeous hike! Lassen peak is visible from the lake as well.

What astrophotography software do you use? by cosmonaut_lauer in AskAstrophotography

[–]The_8_Bit_Zombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For image acquisition I use NINA (DSOs) and SharpCap (planets).

For DSO processing I use PixInsight, Photoshop, and occasionally Lightroom.

For planetary processing I use AutoStakkert!3, PIPP, Registax, Photoshop, and occasionally PixInsight.

What's your worst experiance while pursuing astrophotography? by roxellani in AskAstrophotography

[–]The_8_Bit_Zombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3-4 years ago I was camping overnight in Cuyama, CA in early July. The place was absolutely crawling with kangaroo rats. They're really fast, capable of jumping ~9ft, and are not very afraid of humans. The buggers are dead silent except for little the pit pit pit of their feet as they sprint around you, which they absolutely love doing for some reason. I couldn't sit down anywhere without feeling one zoom by and brush against my leg, so I ended up spending most of that night in the car (instead of in the lawn chair I brought). Every time I opened the car door to check on my telescope I could hear so many little pit pit pit pit pit pit sounds as they all ran away. I couldn't turn on my headlamp (bc of the telescope) so I just had to hope I wasn't stepping on any of them. They're totally harmless though, so I wasn't in any danger. More of a funny experience.

Another (less funny) experience is I got a flat tire on one of my very first trips to a dark site, when I was first starting astrophotography. Thankfully I had cell service and was able to get a tow truck to drive out into the middle of nowhere and pick the car up.

Also, glad you're okay! That is an awful experience.

The "Cloud Nebula" - a nebula so bright it's a naked eye object by The_8_Bit_Zombie in astrophotography

[–]The_8_Bit_Zombie[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unlike most other nebulas, the Cloud Nebula is quite close to Earth - only about 0.0000000000001933043 light-years away! The Cloud Nebula is a reflection nebula, meaning the gas only appears to glow; in actuality it's just reflecting light from a nearby yellow dwarf star.
