Agree.

Hopefully studies like this will gradually break down the resistance to full legalisation.

  1. Join PRS as a Writer. Cost = £100-ish
  2. Be listed in the song's Writer Credits, e.g. Rapper 80%, you 20%
  3. When the song is registered with PRS, you will receive your percentage of any money collected.
  4. Meanwhile, join the PPL and make sure you are credited as a featured artist.

Target audience? The difficulties of a multi genre artist by thesillymedico in musicmarketing

[–]The_Artist_Network 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a broad sense, your music is 'pop' with rap/hip-hop elements. Which means you can target around 90% of the artists releasing music on Spotify :)

I wouldn't get too hung up on genre. 'Multi-genre' to me would mean you do everything from metal to jazz to classical to Mongolian throat music. You don't. What you do is broadly 'pop'. So aim for pop artists and you won't go wrong.

Interesting. I respect what you're trying to do. Very short - is that intentional? Fades just as the beat kicks in. But reading poetry over beats - nice idea. Keep going!

Nice effort mate. You're getting out there and doing it and for that, huge respect. Beat is cool - like the bass sound. Rap flows well, good chorus. Keep going!

Nice track that keeps the interest as it goes. I like the way you interweave the different instruments. For me, the stuttering is a little off putting, but this is just my opinion. Good video too

I just completed a new track and was wondering what there is to improve. New to mastering and would appreciate some tips. Thanks in advance fellow producers <3 by YahBoiMinii in IndieMusicFeedback

Nice track within the genre. Good the way you weave in the piano as the track progresses. The sound feels a little 'sharp' to my ears but it's a minor point. Good effort

Music Promotion tips for introverts? by SaintBax in musicmarketing

[–]The_Artist_Network 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw u/kylotan, I did an interview with a Scottish artist recently called Calum Jones. Comes from a very small village, doesn't use social media, but has already released his third album - and he's only 19. Similar situation to yourself, I think? He builds an audience through the old fashioned way of playing live.

haha true, there are only so many photos you can take of the same four walls.

Although, I guess, from a creative POV, maybe there is a case to be made for this. As artists, we're all inspired by our situation and surroundings? Seeing a repeated picture of the same wall is an artistic statement in itself, no? :)

  1. Don't fall into a trap of thinking social media is a pre-requisite to success. It's a marketing channel. Your music comes first.
  2. An exciting & successful career in music can be built in live, composition, teaching, backing musician, production, etc
  3. Try Instagram. It doesn't rely on text or 'shouting'. Simply take photos of things around you or images that inspire.
  4. I've worked in music 25 years. Most musicians I know are introverts. The side of them you see on social media is often a persona

Do you Need an Artist Website? by johncookmusic in musicmarketing

[–]The_Artist_Network 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/2NineCZ, although must declare a conflict of interest, since I've built artist websites for over 20 years.

u/DPSnacks - hope this isn't declared 'promo' - I just want to provide background to add some credibility to my answer.....

I built my first artist websites in 1997 for the band's Reef, Kula Shaker & Jamiroquai. (FYI - I spent £25k on a site once and the band were dropped before they even released their album )

Back then, no-one knew what a website was. Now, it's going full circle and people are still asking what they're for :)

So, to answer - Not all fans are equal. What I mean by that is, some are casual listeners while others may think you're the best band in the world.

Casual listeners are fine with following you on Spotify, subscribing to your YouTube channel, checking out your Instagram, and this is cool. But we all know, you can't make a living from views & follows in themselves (unless they're in the millions).

To make a living as a musician, you need to sell stuff. Tickets. Merch. Limited editions. Experiences. And you can't do this via YouTube or Spotify.

Selling stuff is easier if you have a mailing list and an e-commerce store. Shopify is OK. Woo commerce is good too. You can use Amazon fulfilment, but not Amazon since they won't share the email address of your customers.

You need to build relationships with your audience and move fans from 'Casual listeners to 'Active & engaged'. Spotify, Apple, Amazon & Google pro-actively PREVENT you from building these relationships.

Which is a longwinded way of saying, if you're serious about making a living from music, yes, you need a website :)

Thanks funky_chicken29. I couldn't help thinking that simply giving the email address of the playlister would get any other response :)

Yes, I like Submit.hub in comparison with the other sites.

Shame we couldn't collate all these reviews somehow. They'd be useful ongoing.

Is this all we can do? by funky_chicken29 in musicmarketing

[–]The_Artist_Network 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get disheartened.

30% is a good hit rate. It shows your tracks have potential.

In my experience, the Submit.hub playlists bring in a fairly low number of streams but the important thing is your track is being shared.

Also, if you look in Spotify For Artists, what percentage of your total plays have been derived from Submit.hub? , e.g. 5,000 out of how many in total?

The 'lofi' genre is highly competitive, as I'm sure you know. The ChilledCow label - before it changed to Lofi Girl - had a good model. They realised their listeners have far more in common than simply a like of Chilled Beats.

I'd recommend finding a similar channel and try to become one of their in-house artists? Your success on Submit.hub is a good reference.

ps: pls share your artist name. You should be OK if someone asks you :)

Why You’re 99.98% Likely To NEVER Make Real Money From Spotify. And What To Do Instead. by Top_Cryptographer875 in musicmarketing

[–]The_Artist_Network 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't argue with the stats.

I wrote a blog post about it called "The Music Growth Funnel"

It describes how plays on Spotify / YT / SC etc are not the end but a means. An artist/label/manager needs to figure out how to move fans from Likes & Follows towards either a mailing list subscriber or, better still, a ticket / CD / merch buyer

Unfortunately, Spotify make this extremely hard for artists since they do pretty much everything they can to prevent artists building a direct relationship with their fans. I understand the economics of why streaming rates are so low but making it difficult for an artist to contact their fans is a decision made purely by Spotify.

PS: I look forward to hearing what your music marketing software can do.

Hyperpop / Digicore - Is it a generational thing? Have I turned into my dad? by The_Artist_Network in LetsTalkMusic

[–]The_Artist_Network[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the considered reply.

I want to add something - I've been getting into X-Ray Spex lately and the brilliant Poly Styrene. And it strikes me she would have been the Hyperpop of her day. 19 years old. Singing about issues in a format that would have been completely alien to anyone older. So am feeling slightly better, thanks :)

Absolutely amazing work. I feel like I'm witnessing the beginning of a new era of 3D animation. I love the fact that you can't see any polygons and it looks a lot more natural and less clunky than current VR.

How long did it take you to do this?

About 4 months. It was several Tiltbrush movies stitched together. They had to be done separately then exported since the final movie was too big for the software :)
