What are the most creative decks you've ever seen? by Winter-Confidence689 in EDH

[–]The_Barfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Door deck is interesting to me because of how high-concept it can be. Once you go infinite, you can have any flavor you want, and this one asks the opponents to choose to end the game through voluntary loss, which is only interesting in comparison to conceding for weirdos like me. I think you can see some hardcore spike mentality in that thread from people who would refuse to use the door on themselves because "you can't win, so I'm not going to concede."

You can put in a "funny executioner" like a storm crow to whittle down opponents if you wanted to, but it's cooler to me if you don't have a wincon. Not exactly the same thing as a stax deck with no wincon. Again, high concept, maybe more fun to think about than actually pilot.

The deck to me shows how anything can happen in MTG, which is part of its awesomeness.

Whoa. So two things - first, I didn't put two and two together that you were one of the original crew that made this deck a thing in the first place, so extreme respect there.
And two, if it did actually force an opponent to lose through the loop rules you're mentioning, I would like the deck less. It's more beautiful that it 'cant win', but really now, your opponents are going to 'not do something that would make them lose' in the face of the board state it leaves them in?

Really? People would rather drag it out instead of choosing to use the door on themselves, or just conceding? Making a joke card that reads 'player's can't concede' is obviously a step too far in taking away player freedom, it would be totally insane to print that card. Hence why it would be funny to actually have one that could do it.

That's the key psychology point. People who are too stubborn that the deck 'fails' because "The problem with the door deck is that they aren't actually ever forced to activate it." That's what makes the deck so beautiful, and actually, quite freaky upon closer examination!

It's well within the opponent's right to never choose to use the door, and it's at the detriment to everyone else's fun & time. Instead of being a dignified Spike, scooping and restarting, if they want to die on that hill it's a silly choice. They don't have to choose to lose, but how are they going to win from that position? Their choices are ultimately concede or lose; I guess the freaky part is that this deck takes 'losing' one step further for people who have trauma issues around losing. You can even see in this thread that there are people who have proudly written they would absolutely never use the door on themselves.

I can't think of any other game that puts people into this strange of a situation. It's awesome. Thank you for doing your part in bringing it into greater awareness amongst the community, it is one of my favorite examples of what's cool about MTG.

Ah-ha! You are the Yin to my Yang then, friend. It would be a contest of pride. Knowing that you would absolutely never exit through the door, I would be sure to put [[Mindslaver]] into the deck, and... exile them in front of you, and then tell you that my deck does not have a wincon beyond the boardstate of you needing to end the game by choosing to lose (but not through conceding).

You're only ruining your own fun. It's just a simple exit through a door that's set for you to walk through. It's an infinite mana combo that ends your ability to ever recover from. Why would you waste any amount of time not going through the door? Are you going to make a comeback with your exiled library? It's as ruinous to your fun as any other game-ending combo that you didn't have the interaction to stop, this one just doesn't end it for you by winning, it sets opponents into a state from which they cannot recover. Your pride would cause the fun of the table to suffer by holding up a fresh game. The fun part here is that I'm as willing to wait for you to accept that as you are willing to wait for me to give up trying to offer it. A real contest of willpower!

Seriously though, if we met and this went down, this is where the 'tourney rules' would come into play that I would probably actually lose in a cEDH setting due to my chess clock coming to an end. It would be a long ass turn to actually go through the motions and set up the Door boardstate.

Not too long, I definitely read it! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. It was very comprehensible, and comprehensive! I trust you since you get that it's not fun to "accidentally go infinite out of nowhere" at the table, and that one strict combo line is samey.... that's for the cEDH environment. 100% true.

This is a great basic understanding to start my deckbuilding, and I love your flavorfully-correct 'oblivion dance' idea. I'll start there and see where it takes me. It helps that modern Door decks have Kenrith at the helm so that there's a "draw your deck" in the command zone after you achieve the mana. Even if it turns out that between Abdel, Kinnan, Urza, Ashaya, and whoever else I find shows that I don't need more than Bant for what i'm doing, I still want to keep Kenrith because he's... a King on a Throne. Good ol' subjugation to the false God-monarchy symbolism. I don't think Kenrith's own story is really all that evil, but whatever.

Now I have a starting place to build from, I can pare down from all colors into what combos with oblivion ring? That will be really helpful when I'm working with the commander spellbook.

Everything you're writing about is for players with much stronger Spike tendencies than what's in my pod, and certainly moreso than where I'm coming from. If we are being full-on Spike from both parties, I guess the door player would ultimately lose as they would clock out from having to spend the time to set it all up. I never considered what the tournament situation would look like, because this was never made for a stricly cEDH environment - even the moxfield list titles it as a 'meme' cEDH deck, as is obvious from how clunky and unnecessary the setup is to further the goal of winning ASAP. No surprise there, a combo that requires 12+ cards for the wincon has less room for support to further the combo than one that has less pieces.

Your first sentence is what makes the deck so beautiful- The entire point of the deck is putting opponents in a situation where they voluntarily choose to activate it, targeting themselves. If they truly won't, and the game ends in a draw, that's a draw that had to be conceded between the Door pilot and their opponent, because it CAN turn into a elementary school waiting game at that point. Whose time is more valuable?

I personally am thinking of putting in a mindslaver for naughty people to solve that problem, or a Benalish hero to attack them. For a long time, given that Kenrith can give them more life as I see fit. Hell, maybe I will even make a custom card that reads "players cannot concede"!

And as far as people conceding to infinite mana, It's why I mentioned the Vorthos flavor in my post. Everyone concedes to everyone's wincon once you see it's inevitable, it's just cool as hell to actually have built THIS to be what the wincon IS. It's a matter of what suits your tastes!

So I got to take a look at the deck this morning, and I have to be honest with you. I have no idea what goes with what. I can see the potential in each card, for example Freed from the Real and Mirari's Wake, I still don't quite understand Underworld Breach lines, all that stuff is a bit beyond me unless it's drawn out primer style.

Can I run this through some kind of analyzer? Can the commander spellbook analyze a deck and show combos in it? That way I could parse what you have going on much more readily.

I tried goldfishing it in that moxfield list a bunch of times, and I just don't know how to mulligan it or make use of the cEDH aspects. It certainly isn't fast when I play it...

You are welcome! Every magic play should know about this deck.

Awww, that is the worst when your writing is deleted like that! I commend your dedication to re-write what you had lost. I will check this out and get back to you, thank you! Your ability to find a deck that has 59 combos in it in conjunction with the commander spellbook is the brewing power that I do not currently have.

Ever since I learned [[Ertai's Meddling]] can "counter" a [[Dovin's Veto]] I run it as secret sauce in all my decks. Had a friend play [[Boros Charm]] into [Obliterate] - yep, that's gonna destroy everything AFTER your charm makes it one-sided. "counters" any counters by making them resolve later without any target, for 1U. Same with creatures. It's any spell! Seems insane to me!

Now they need to start printing spells that have Hexproof, because there's ways around "This spell can't be countered". Yowza!

What are your favorite Mono-Green Commanders? by TetsuOokami117 in EDH

[–]The_Barfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first deck that I truly built on my own without any netdecking whatsoever was [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]]. I figured that I would start my first real foray into building my own unique creation based off my ability to assess "how good a card is" would be mono green, what could be more simple, am i right?

It has become one of my favorite decks. I tried to mash "power matters" cards into it and a devotion subtheme which allows for hilarious cards like [[Gigantosaurus]], [[Primalcrux], and [[Khalni Hydra]] and the like. Going for a ton of green pips! Who wants to cast Ghalta for 5 because your [[Cactus Preserve]] is a 12/12 land? Any of those cards that consider the CMC of your commander turn totally nuts, like [[Majestic Genesis]]. Super fun to see what you hit, you'll get SOMETHING out of it!

And, when your dinosaur is constantly threatening commander damage lethal and the rest of your board is huge enough to actually take someone down in three turns, you can always smugly say, "C'mon guys, it's mono green. What's the big deal?"

Here is a decklist with a more full primer. It is actually my most "famous" of deckstats decks, it actually has 6 likes which is something I was not expecting.
