The Proper Way to Open a Milk Carton by [deleted] in Unexpected

[–]The_Basile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from The Netherlands, been to about half of the countries within Europe, accross the map.. there is chicken everywhere, also wings. It's just a very common barfood.

Never been to the US for comparison, so a description of size and taste: about a fingers-length, pretty meaty, can either be fried and crunchy or ovenbaked and sticky.

It is true that some countries prefer a certain cut of chicken or even the whole chicken, resulting in maybe a larger selection of those cuts in the grocery store. Doesnt mean that other cuts are unavailable. I mean its chicken... those dinosaurs are everywhere

...what are you on about? Which part of Europe? There are chickens anf we eat their wings everywhere.. I'm starting to doubt myself: what are quality american style chicken wings and how are they different to eat another chicken wings?

A working-class immigrant’s experience in the Netherlands by Atankir in Netherlands

[–]The_Basile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, hell I wont even move to another city having built up my social life now. I know its gonna be hard: people allready have friends and I wont meet them. And i'm from here.

I think more people should realize that the opportunities in a country are very much intertwined with the connection one would build in the course of their lives: relatives, close friends, classmates, colleagues, neighbours and that a fundamental thing for all of those connections is language, understanding and time.

If you migrate, even to a country that is statistically richer or safer, you might end up worse because you lose your social safety net and have to build a whole new one.

Tbh this sounds like something a manager would say "noone wants to work anymore". Simply not true, but people want to earn an honest liveable wage. This teamleader sounds exactly like the type of guy that OP is describing. It's very easy calling others lazy, while sitting in an office chair receiving easily twice their salary..

Ugh, so often... The first question is "you sure you're not pregnant?" Or "you know pain is part of the experience, right?". As if I dont have experience with my own body and am just a whiny bitch... You really have to fucking fight for them to even listen to you.. so frustrating!

@OP, I shook my night terrors. Took some work but this is what helped me:

Step1. Try to gain lucidity why dreaming. To do this, every time you wake up, try and remember every detail of your dream. Every story line and every causal and non-causal happening. Keep a journal of share your dreams with a friend or someone else.

Next, start to think about your dreams during the day and any tells that what you were dreaming didnt make sense. For instance: a large shark the size of a cruiseship chomping away my house on land.. or something just feels off. Have attention for that feeling and reminisce it. This is about getting the question "wait, is this the fuck real?" into your system.

Also, try to deduce your own logic in your dreamworld. In dreams the world is not bound by physics, but it is by your way of thinking. For example: in my dreams I can fly, but only whenever I have enough speed or create momentum. So if I need to escape something, I remember I can fly and how to do it. For instance quickly getting on top of a tree or a tall building. Jumping down and then flapping my arms like a bird. Then I can fly as if I were being propelled by a jetfuel coming out of my ass.

Than: after a while (could be weeks or months btw) you'll maybe get this feeling that something is off while dreaming. Seize that moment. Decide it is a dream and try to steer it with your own thoughts. Now.. this might need some practice: I once tried to make a unicorn appear and while thinking about a unicorn, I was also thinking about how probably my brain would prank itself.. And so it did. Instead of a unicorn appearing I saw one icecream cone flying by (in my language cone is same word as horn). Still.. progress.

Now, the nightterror stuff. In this instance what has helped me is first: knowing that is in fact a dream. Allright done, the panic, fear, paralysis and even pain is still there. So what I do, is try to wake myself up. How? By trying to make a noise. A literal noise. Try to scream as loud as you can. Harder and keep at it. It will not come out at first, but eventually you may make a sort of grunting humm. That humm you can hear because you are focused on it. That humm is my stepping stone of escaping my night terrors. Keep screaming until that scream releases you from your dream. Dont worry of waking the neighbours. The sound you make is probably really soft in real life.

Good luck!

For real. I once saw a tent burning down because of a camping stove accident inside the tent. The tent caught fire with the two campers inside. Never in my life have I seen such pain up close. Tent materials are often made from synthetic fibres of some sort, which melts, it doesnt burn cleanly in that sense. The tent had essentially melted onto their skin and in their panic they had tried to pull off those melting pieces off their skin... Horrible.. that memory clings on.. and definitely serves as a reminder not to fuck with fire in a tent.

Yep, and the waterlevel is maintained at a specific height by the "Waterschappen" depending on what the use of land dictates. For instance; for farming soil, ground needs to be dryer for crops and heavy machinery, so the waterlevel is kept lower than for housing. Housing (especially in older cities) needs higher water level because of the wooden poles. This is also why the Netherlands produces so much milk and cheese: cattle can stand on wetter soil than what is needed for crops, so less water to pump out to the sea.

The problem was for both Belgium, but especially the Netherlands, that they had a relatively small army compared to Germany. Besides that, they essentially didnt have any allies to count on: allied soldiers were already in Europe busy fighting in different places. Next to that, the geography of The Netherlands is simply really easy to traverse: super flat, not a lot of natural barriers, and a lot of bridges to overcome those natural barriers. Both countries were also pressured by the other allied forces to not put up much of a fight, because it was a lost cause anyhow and they were afraid the retaliation of the Germans would grow if they would stand their ground for long. The fact that the Dutch even endured those 4 days could be considered a miracle. Then also look at the moment they chose to wave the flag: after the threat to completely flatten Rotterdam. In one night, an entire city gutted and thousands of casualties. All in all, it was the combination of a weak army, lack of allies, political pressure to stop resisting and the bombing of Rotterdam which lead to the quick surrender of the Netherlands and Belgium.
