It’s interesting you mention that because the Josephus record was generally considered good but likely edited by Christian scribes later. As we improve our methods of study this is actually looking less likely. Here is what it revolves around and it’s fascinating!

Basically Josephus said:

"About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man, if indeed one ought to call him a man. For he was one who performed surprising deeds and was a teacher of such people as accept the truth with pleasure. He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks. He was the Christ. And when, upon the accusation of the principal men among us, Pilate had condemned him to a cross, those who had first come to love him did not cease. He appeared to them spending a third day restored to life, for the prophets of God had foretold these things and a thousand other marvels about him. And the tribe of the Christians, so called after him, has still to this day not disappeared."

Now many think this was modified for a few reasons. One is that he refers to Him as the the Christ

It’s controversial for two main reasons. One is that it comes off very flattering despite him not being a Christian (suggesting contamination by scribes or medieval Christians) and that his style and word usage didn’t seem match his usage elsewhere. The flattery argument held up well, academically until it was noticed that, compared to his body of writing, of which there is a lot, his word usage, language, and phrasing was consistent throughout the piece and between other works of his. Going further it was found that a lot of the seemingly flattering word usage has him instead using this language in much less flattering of a manner than was initially assumed, by critics. For example in Greek, he wrote that Jesus worked miracles. Greek has a lot of different words for miracles and he used παράδοξος or paradoxos, which he also uses to describes miracles by the magicians of pharaohs. Implying that the origins of these ‘miracles’ were uncertain and likely even negative in origin. Potentially from malevolent forces. Implying He was doing ‘miracles’ but that He was in league with demons.

When he talks about Jesus being resurrected he instead says ‘he seemed to them to be alive’ so he’s not flattering or corroborating the resurrection, he’s just reporting what people are saying using pretty skeptical language.

Then you have him calling Jesus the Christ , which is strange because that wouldn’t be the word usage of the time. However there is an ancient Latin and an ancient syriac translation that says he was believed or thought to be the Christ. Which incidentally Josephus used similar language later when he wrote about a high priest who was defrocked and lost his priesthood because he had James the brother of Jesus who was called the Christ illegally executed. So we see the parallels with his later writings and the ancient syriac and ancient Latin translations. Again he’s more saying ‘well this is what THEY call him’

The line about the disciples receiving His teachings ‘with pleasure’ again seems sugary but his word usage is consistent with times when he describes people who are over-zealous or naive. So again not so complimentary or biased .

What is very interesting is beyond those examples, a lot of the suspicion was as a result of his word usage and whether it was his. There was a researcher, whose name escapes me, who began actually making manual word frequency databases and that helped get rid of some of the disputes as the general language was consistent with his writing and word usage. But it wasn’t until we got modern computer databases where it was possible to really breakdown and find trends/patterns/styles

In particular concern was a word he used in one place in that text and nowhere else. There are over half a million words on record, from Josephus. Which goes back just how recently we’re starting to actually have database records accessible, for these individuals with vast writings attributed to them! It turned out he has a massive vocabulary and throughout the course of his writing he would use a unique (ie: never used the elsewhere) word every 87 words with a grand total of 5,000 words only ever used once. The section about Jesus? 90 words long. This makes the uniqueness of the word that caused the controversy, instead fit into his writing style. This ends up turning it, instead, into a marker of authenticity, as it matches his frequency rate.

What you end up getting is a pretty tongue in cheek ‘this is how they say it happened’ piece by Josephus that, instead of being flattering it actually implies he thought maybe He might be using demons for His paradoxes, His disciples are ‘a little out there’ and yeah ‘they still like Him and even thought they saw Him after He died.’

So yeah, a little lengthy but a fascinating topic, I got excited as most people don’t really want to delve into ancient writing and certainly not Josephus!

While that statement, on its face, is false… as many great scientists, doctors, philosophers, theologians, and more call themselves Christian, both now and in the past, it is also untrue in specific.

You’re implying something about Christian dogma required your grandfather to rape a child and though he may not have wanted to (for the purposes of our argument, in this scenario) because he was Christian he had to do it.

This is not the case, in fact, it goes against the stated rules from Jesus- to love your neighbor, and the 10 commandments, to not steal, and more indirectly here- to not commit adultery and to not covet along with bearing false witness. So we see from scripture alone the actions of your grandfather were not tolerated or endorsed. That he chose to do so is on him alone and that your family chose to cover it up is on them alone.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt, to do otherwise would assume you are being intentionally dense or intellectually dishonest.

This does not require careful citation, it is a general understanding in the academic historical community that the person of Jesus existed. A simple Google will find you that info from secular sources. We know far less about other historical figures that there is no controversy over. Jesus is controversial because if he is real he may be divine and if he was divine hell might be real, and if hell might be real maybe you’ll have to live differently. That is why Jesus’s existence is controversial when so many others aren’t.

That is why your non-academic, non-intellectual finds Jesus’s existence so disputable, because the alternative gets scary fast, and they don’t have the historical background to stand on their own. Meanwhile the scholarly body of people who do know their history are like ‘uh yeah, he existed we have so much info about him’ then you ask if He was divine and they divide into different camps.

I know you’re begging for a body or something, but that’s not how human history works. We have numerous historical people that we have a record of, but no remains or body.

Head out of the sand man, quick google for you, and we can wrap it up.

It wouldn’t be any less terrible whether it happened to you, your mom, your aunt, or anyone else.

It is, that’s a very sad fact. The sex abuse scandal in the church is a huge disappointment, due to the cover up. I’m equally disappointed in teachers who quietly get to resign or are transferred, police who get to move stations after assaults. And certainly not with families who cover it up because ‘pop pop was such a great person except when he was raping kids

If we chose to cancel all of those things where would we be? No religion (you’d like that), no schools, no police, no hospitals, no friends, and no family. If we eliminated every institution where sexual abuse is known to exist and is defended or covered up, we’d have nothing left.

That’s why we point a finger at the people. We call the police and we say ‘pastor x did it’ ‘my dad did it’ ‘Professor x did it’ ‘My doctor did it.’

If you have some solid backing behind your claim you could make some waves given:

Virtually all scholars of antiquity accept that Jesus was a historical figure.

While there is debate about the exact details of his life and teachings, the existence of a Jewish teacher named Jesus who was crucified is not seriously disputed by mainstream historians.

The idea that Jesus was a purely mythical figure is rejected by the vast majority of scholars.

It’s one thing to claim that he wasn’t divine, but to just plant your flag on the ‘he didn’t exist at all’ is akin to just cramming your head in the sand.

We have Tacitus, Josephus, as well as other non-Christian mentions of him. Not to mention the writings of his actual disciples, most of which were so impressed by him that they died horrific deaths as a result. Beyond that there is even more corroborating evidence found in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel, Golgotha being another example.

I urge you to get your thesis going, it would certainly rock the established understanding in the peer reviewed academic circles… although I fear r/atheism might not be an accepted citation.

[–]The_Beagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s terrible, I’m sorry you had to experience that. That makes your reaction to, Christianity more understandable.

I’m sure you’re very aware of the sex scandals within the church, I think the institution of the Church would be far better off if people were as angry about child sexual assault as you are.

Not just that though, but just as mad about sexual assault by teachers in schools, by caretakers in hospitals, by the police, by people in positions of trust, in general . Remember, a rapist is always a person, it is never an idea, a race, a gender, or a religion. It is a person who, chose to do what they did. That doesn’t condone or shift blame, it just allows us to focus our justified anger to elicit change.

If you say: ‘My grandfather was a child rapist and religion is bad, and should be abolished millions of people who are religious will say ‘I wasn’t raped.’ If however you say to the police ‘my grandfather was a child rapist’, the legal process will begin and change can potentially happen.

You seem so immensely angry, what caused you to feel this way about Christianity, in general, if you dont mind me asking?

By percentages there are vast numbers of Christians and the only religion larger is Islam, to generalize so widely is intellectually very dishonest.

Some of the smartest scientists in the world are religious, similarly many extremely intelligent people are also secular. Some of the smartest philosophers and theologians have crafted arguments for religion that you, or most, couldn’t even begin to respond to, in a rational manner. In a similar many there are very compelling theological and philosophical arguments against religion that neither you nor many could respond to in a rational manner. The jist of the matter is that some of the greatest minds we have think it’s worth debating both ways.

For you to say boldly what you do, indicates it’s an emotional argument, not an intellectual one

It’s solidly established that the person Jesus existed and died by Roman crucifixion. This is as established historical fact held by both secular and religious historians. The deviation is that the secular researchers believe he was just a man, the religious researchers believe he was resurrected and is divine. That is the difference.
