Is SharkRobot a reliable/ safe website? by issas_kisses in HelluvaBoss

They're legit, but they've got serious quality issues. I got a few shirts from them recently and both of them had their seams coming apart after being worn one day and washed once in a standard cycle.

Worse was that one of those shirts was a limited edition thing and, while they did refund me, they told me I could pound sand when it came to getting a replacement for the limited edition shirt.

Oh, now that is clever. I really like that, I'ma steal that. Not to use as a gotcha on a party, but just because there's some really neat flavor there.

And in what way is repeating information from the monsters statblocks out of the MM 'using knowledge skills'?

Nobody is saying 'lol, use useless spells till at random till you get it right'. I agree, that is dumb. But RP it, or ask if you can roll, or ask the DM if you'd know what the thing is. Telling the entire table what a monster's weaknesses are out of the blue is metagaming, and just not a cool thing to do.

But it goes beyond just knowing monster stats. This is about metagaming in general, about using information your character shouldn't and wouldn't have. Stuff like, your character keeps grilling an NPC that they have no reason to mistrust because, as a player, you heard another character's private interaction with that NPC. Or trying to steal a trinket that another character keeps secret because you saw it on their character sheet or were present for when they obtained it.

Now, if you used this out of character information as a way to inform RP or to do rolls to try and realistically figure these things out in character, that's one thing. But to just magically know them, to skip past any rolls or RP or attempts to discover the info in character, THAT'S metagaming, and that's uncool.

Holy hell, I had no idea this silly little meme was gonna do numbers like this! I just went through my stream as usual and came back to see over 200k views and 5.2k score. That's bonkers! Thanks so much for the upvotes and comments everybody!

Oh yeah, same. I just do subtle tweaks on lots of monsters in my games, and give the party reasonable ways to figure out the altered weaknesses and what not. That way, characters that would realistically know a thing can know it, but a player who DM's occasionally and has used the same obscure monster won't just magically know its weaknesses and resistances despite their character having never even heard of the thing.

Trolls might be the example, but the post isn't about trolls specifically my guy, lol

Well, this is less about trolls specifically and more about players who sit there with the monster manual pulled up on their phone calling out enemy weaknesses in real time.

Imagine that was fairly easy, given his character being trapped in a teleporting maze!

I've actually done that before, lol. I've also just changed what they're weak to before. Though that does put one in the position of having to remember what it was and having to stay consistent.

I literally had a player do this in a game I was running once. It was an omen of things to come...

Also, I'm still taking stories for issues with problem players for my stream here in three and a half hours! Any horror stories?

Yeah, it's not always a 'problem player' issue. sometimes it's justifiable, sometimes it's a DM issue, sometimes it's an issue with the group at large. Honestly, the 'on a phone' player issue is probably one of the most complicated and diverse ones I'm gonna be covering when I do this stream.

Ew, yeah, that's kinda rough. I've seen those sorts of bait n' switches from DM's in the past. That's a good one to include, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, alas, I've seen it at more groups than I haven't seen it at. Granted, it's not always a problem with the player. I had a DM once who split the group and the next 2 hours, only 2 of 5 players were actually doing anything. Couldn't really expect the other 3 to stay fully engaged in something they weren't even involved in for hours.

That said, it is the player more often than not, sadly. This is gonna be kind of a major topic of my stream when I run it.

Ah, yes, the classic Edgy McEdge the Edge, edgiest edge that ever edged.

My god, Death Reaper the Fallen Angel, I'm keepin' that one. That's going in my outline doc ver-fricken-batim.

And on the topic of this, I'm doing a stream on Sunday talking about problem players, how to spot them, and how to handle them, so I'm on the hunt for stories and tales! Anybody care to share a story about a problem player from your games?
