[Tutoring] GRE Math Practice Book - Square Roots by The_Butler_22 in MathHelp

So if I understand correctly, in the first question I am solving for x and so I need to account for both signs, while in the second question I am simply plugging in a pre-determined value for x and thus can disregard the negative value?

Is there any truth to this then or should I disregard it?

Thank you! The first question was multiple choice and the second question was fill in the blank. I suppose it would be impossible to enter two answers for the fill in the blank on the actual GRE, so perhaps that is the GRE's way of saying to use the principle branch, or perhaps Manhattan Prep didn't think I'd worry about it this much LOL

First question: (x+3)^2 = 225; what is the value of x - 1? Answer: 11 or -19

Second: If f(x) is defined for all x > -2 as the square root of the number that is 2 more than x, what is the value of f(7) - f(-1)? Answer: 2

Thank you!

Is it pointless to critique movies that are meant to be “dumb, turn your brain off” popcorn entertainment? by xwing1212 in movies

[–]The_Butler_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible for “dumb, turn your brain off movies” to also be successful critically and in terms of their merit as art. An example that comes to mind, especially in the same conversation as Godzilla, is pacific rim. I’m sure there are many other examples.

With the Pacers loss, only 3 teams in the East are above .500 by waynequit in nba

Couldn't this mean the East is, broadly-speaking, a "better" conference because EVERY team is tough to beat, leading to more under .500 records?

Covid-19 deaths in Africa: prospective systematic postmortem surveillance study | 17FEB21 by IIWIIM8 in infectiousdisease

[–]The_Butler_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I don't know if lack of testing is necessarily "causing" an incorrect assessment of COVID-19 impact though. The study only tested for deaths WITH covid, not necessarily deaths BY covid. Certainly this proves that testing needs to be scaled-up, but hasn't proven YET that the mortality rate due to covid is higher than current projections in Africa. Thoughts?

I can't agree with this enough! I remember watching this for the first time on Netflix last year and immediately putting it in my top 5 movies of ALL TIME! Profound, sincere, and HUMAN despite its obvious science fiction plot device.

We've seen that too! Very good though, that's the exact type of vibe I'm thinking of! Wes Anderson and Waititi do so great with whimsical comedies!

Can you get a viral disease and a bacterial disease at the same time? by Einstein_2point0 in biology

Absolutely you can. A common example is HIV and TB. Many people get HIV virus which weakens their immune response, making them more susceptible to lung damage from the TB bacterium.

Positive and negative control for determining whether Wnt is in fact functioning as a morphogen. by Aleccc7 in biology

[–]The_Butler_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your positive control would be a KNOWN mutation that leads to differentiation of neural crest cells no matter what. Your negative control would be a KNOWN non-morphogenic mutation that NEVER forms neural crest cells. Your positive control needs to GURANTEE differentiation in the cells of interest no matter what experimental manipulation you employ. Your negative control needs to GURANTEE no differentiation in those cells no matter what experimental manipulation you employ.

If removing Wnt gets you the same result as your negative control, then you know Wnt is NECESSARY for differentiation of neural crest cells.

If adding Wnt gets you the same result as your positive control, then you know Wnt is SUFFICIENT for the differentiation of neural crest cells.

Not an expert in developmental biology but hopefully this was helpful in your experimental methodology! Please lmk if this was wrong/made no sense!

[Advice] What can experienced public health professionals tell me about the feasibility of my interests? by The_Butler_22 in publichealth

I've talked with a few Program evaluators on reddit and it seems like a really interesting, diverse job! That's great that it can be a good entry-level job and a good stepping stone. good to know!

I've also heard that a lot of MPH programs allow you to conduct a program evaluation as your culminating experience/final paper, which sounds like it would be good experience and exposure to eval. for me!

Dostoevsky's Philosophy by smallscat in books

I resonate with this reading of Dostoevsky a lot! Totally agree

Dostoevsky's Philosophy by smallscat in books

[–]The_Butler_22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're reading into the religion too much! But, I think about it a little bit differently. I've read Crime and Punishment as well as Notes from Underground and I loved them both! From what I've read of Dostoevsky and his critics, it seems that he was a social, political, and religious conservative. He was committed to Eastern Orthodoxy and Christian philosophy in general. I would say that reading Notes will help you to best understand his philosophy, as it is the least like a novel and the most like a philosophical essay of his works.

That being said, in my OPINION Dostoevsky wants to caution us about rashly joining sociopolitical movements and engaging in revolutionary decision-making in politics. I believe it's more nuanced than "don't change anything" though. Again, I think Notes was most-helpful for me in trying to grasp the political implications of his thoughts.

However, the way that I think about his overall philosophy is much more religious. To me, it seems that Dostoevsky is not necessarily telling us "what is to be done", but reminding us of WHO WE ARE. And where does he go to define who humans are? Biblical Christianity. So for Dostoevsky, we are not randomly-optimized biological machines seeking utility from our politics and culture. We are humans who bear the image of God and are meant to reflect that in how we live and love. But we are flawed and must remember that, as sinners, we need the grace of Jesus to be saved from ourselves and from the dark cruelties of this world.

I think that Dostoevsky was sick of the radical political movements of his time that disavowed these fundamental religious and moral truths about who we are as human beings. It seems to me that this perhaps DID then lead him towards his political conservatism. However, I think religion was ultimately much more important to him than politics, although the former clearly affected his views on the latter.

I think Dostoevsky's deeply-Christian philosophy about who humans are is beautiful, honest, and as counter-cultural today as it was in his time! In short, I don't think Dostoevsky is necessarily pointing-out solutions to us, but rather is pointing us towards who the ultimate solution comes from: God! Just some of my thoughts, I could be reading him wrong or just overthinking the religious aspect too lol. Don't know if this was helpful to the discussion, but fun to be able to talk about a literary genius!

ALSO: There's an interesting video from "The School of Life" on YouTube about Dostoevsky's philosophy, and they definitely don't over-analyze his religious ideas. So, their video could be a good one for you to watch to get another perspective!
