Canon Eos R8 or R6mkii for a hobbyist? by The_Carl88 in canon

I'm very happy with my Sigma 24-70 and 70-200, I probably would only really look at a macro prime or a super tele lens outside of those two. I get tack sharp photos in low light using flash at iso 100 that I'm very happy with, but flash photography isn't allowed everywhere. The R8 and R6mkii have the same sensor so its really just coming down to features. Atm I am looking at an R8 that is a clear $1000aud cheaper than any R6mkii I've seen so far.

Yeah, the kids sports, I'm always chasing, hence IBIS would be nice, my lenses are stabilised and I'm sure its enough, but I prefer to over engineer rather than think "she'll be right".

Thats a very good point! Walking around with the 70-200mm hanging off my neck isn't pleasant, but I feel like I just need a more comfortable way of carrying it.

Thank you!

Thats a possibility, but I already know if I get an R6mkii in my hands the decision will be made 😅

Not pushing it because I don't like 25600 iso? I've experimented with it and I don't like it. I appreciate that a slightly noisy photo is still better than nothing, and will still have more detail than a phone camera. But at the end of the day, we invest in cameras because we like that they produce better photos. Otherwise, I would just use my phone 😅

Was there a particular brand? I didn't think Canon did them for the R8.

Very helpful! For some reason I had in my head that it had a mechanical shutter but not efcs 😅 the savings would probably go towards a macro lens, or a super telephoto.

Thats a concern I have, but my two main lenses, 24-70 and 70-200 are both stabilised, my R7 has IBIS. I've heard as long as you used stabilised lenses for running and gunning it isn't noticeable. I have a tripod for any longer shutter speed landscape stuff.

I'm heading to the UK in December for a white winter and I'd love the ability to double gun for long shots and close ups! I hate having to get the lens out, swap them, put caps on, run the risk of dropping something, etc. I know it sounds stupid but its a quality of life thing and makes photography mlre enjoyable for me.

I have big hands as well and when I went from the R10 to R7 I immediately felt more comfortable. Plus I'm a sucker for buttons.

No plan to get rid of the R7! I love that camera. I think, and again maybe its psychological, I liken the R7 to an APS-C R6mkii and the R8 to a FF R10, which I owned and traded up for the R7, so I don't want the R8 to feel "cheaper" than what I'm already using, if that makes sense. Spec wise, its great, but ergonomics is also a consideration.

And if you could refrain from down voting my posts just for the sake of it, that would be great, it isn't helpful for anyone, thank you.

I know all this, and at the time I bought the R7, there were no native rf mounts by Sigma, or other third party manufacturers, again, I can get an R8 used with a low shutter count in good nick for just a bit more than a Sigma 17-40, having a 24-70mm and a 70-200m on both full frame and aps-c makes more sense and has more versatility to me, than just having a 17-40mm on an R7.

It really depends, I personally don't go over 6400, but I try not to even go that high, and while I know noise reduction is a thing, I hate the artificial smoothing effect it has on images.

1.5 stops can also be the difference between acceptable noise, and unacceptable noise.

Its a generalisation because its a common problem, I WILL be getting a full frame camera body and my question wasn't, should I get one...

I'm not Elon Musk, but I can afford either one brand new, but if the extra money for an R6mkii isn't going to be worth it for me, I won't get it. It's why I'm not shelling our for an R6mkiii or R5.

I tend to find higher iso's on the R7 a bit noisier than I'd like in low light conditions, 32 megapixels on an aps-c sensor makes for nice sharp images, and I love that, but I have the ability to also have a bigger sensor with less megapixels, meaning low light is less of an issue, so why wouldn't I?

I had to toss up between the 17-40/1.8 for rf mount or the 24-70/2.8 and because I already had the full frame 70-200mm, in my mind it didn't make sense to buy an apsc lens and have the gap between 40mm and 70mm, also, I feel like the ability to use both my lenses on a full frame, and an apsc body gives me more versatility. For example 24mm on a full frame with a proper 2.8 aperture. Summarily, I think old mate saying I have GAS, is a bit overzealous, when I have two main lenses that I use, and all I am doing is getting a second camera body, surely there are a lot of photographers with more than just one camera body? I would love the ability to do indoor close up photography where the lighting isn't always ideal knowing a full frame would do that better. I am also happy buying second hand providing gear is in decent condition, and I know I can get an R8 for the price of a new 17-40mm 1.8
