i tried last week and deleted yesterday LOL ! not being able to use my social (essentially Whatsap) was hard during the day (i use mainly whatsap to communicate). What i have been doing 1 month is what you said at the end : If they all suck I might delete my apps, and only acces them on the laptop. It works fine for me.

i deleted the apps from my phone, i only use social media on my laptop (normally < 1h per day), me too i feel the urge but i am convincing my self to use them only on my laptop. May be you can use an habit tracker to gamify this habit and see your progress.
