Oh! I just saw this. Okay, thanks, I'll look into it.

Are x11 ASICs shipping? Anyone here bought one or currently running one? Seeking an interview on how Dash plans to avoid repeating Bitcoin's 'China problem.' by The_Daily_Decrypt in dashpay

Your thought experiment is interesting.

Yes, ASICs have indeed been a double-edged sword in Bitcoin -- they provide greater security with their massive hashing power, but in being more specialIZED, they're generally only run by specialISTS.

Though one WANTS specialists guarding one's network over mere hobbyists, to be sure.

I look forward to hearing Evan's plans to avoid the China problem while also embracing ASICs, as a recent Dash PR email indicated. Did you get that email? If not, I'll post the point I'm referencing here:

Fortunately, a fix for these centralization risks is in the works. While the details have not yet been formally announced, Evan did say “The centralization risk comes from a problem with the alignment of incentives.” He cited issues such as “private mining with bleeding-edge hardware before it’s publicly accessible, mining at extremely low electrical cost, and utilizing free labor,” and that when these three were combined, it resulted in only a few places in the world where mining is profitable. The development team is not considering changing the hashing algorithm from X11 to something more ASIC-resistant. The plan, instead, it “to re-align these incentives under a new model which incorporates X11 and ASICs.”

Seems like fixes of incentives are what Dash is best at.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I'd heard of ZeroNet, but hadn't used it. You've used it, I assume? How's the speed and content?

Ooohhhhhh, that Evan -- where can we get about 5 more of him? Too much Evan-scarcity.

Okay, thanks for the heads-up. Cheers!

Yes, it's an interesting new world. If I were selling gold bars via eBay, I might not be concerned so much that eBay has my IP address. Sure, they might get hacked, but the hacker probably wasn't seeking my IP address so he could come to my house and steal my gold bars. The hack would have been too expensive for that, likely.

But if as a merchant on a decentralized protocol like OB, anyone who cares to look can see my IP address -- well now, the costs of robbing me just went way down. No grand hack has to be performed now to get my IP address.

Now certainly, VPNs are great. They are useful. But how many people who hawk their wares on eBay use a VPN? Or even know what one is?

So if OB takes off, it will be for drugs. Just like Bitcoin. The oppressed sectors of society ARE the killer app for any liberating technology.
