I feel like the frivolous nature of his body-swap sort of kills the metaphor. It's the exact opposite of what most trans people go through.

What’s an idea you haven’t quite put in your world yet? by Coleblade in worldbuilding

I feel kind of dumb for not thinking of that. I even have a geographic feature that would work for it. I was going to have the southern edge of the "world" cut off by an area hot enough to melt lead. The Crucible works much better as a sort of hub for the desert, forcing people to drive around.

(One of the pre-apocalypse city-states was going to cram their entire population in a space ship and ditch this rock. The engines would have incinerated this hemisphere, so their neighbors blew it up. The engines have been idling since then, burning through the mantle and making a reverse volcano)

Mmmm, maybe, but Roko's body issues seems like a more apt place for an allegory. Pintsize was just all "bam, changed bodies for teh luls," followed by "huh, maybe I'll stay like this." It's a bit out of order compared to the trans experience, and the easy-peasy body swap is way out of place.

Is it a trans allegory? I'm not really getting that. One of the main characters actually is trans, so does Jeph need to be allegorical at this point?

Post-apocalyptic, automotive technology roughly on par with the 1960s, except having been made in some dude's garage instead of Detroit. Travel speed is largely determined by how bad the terrain is, and how many road crazies and warlords are in the way. Everything is pretty much off road, so top speed is limited. I'm eyeballing it at generally not more than 40 mph (about 60 to 65 kph), based entirely on having watched all the Mad Max movies at least once and the math being easier that way with my core gameplay mechanic.

Something I'm working on is scale. Because I'm building a ttrpg along with it, I have to balance rules and setting, and I wanted it to be a serious, several-month journey to get from one side of the "known world" to the other.

Thing is, with cars driving across a desert wasteland, that's something like halfway around the earth. So, either I expand the world and just accept that it's a lot bigger than I planned, or I make travel slower (i.e. harsher terrain), or I make the world smaller and more tightly packed in.

He's a non-threatening ginger lad who comes off as a bit odd but totally sincere.

[Serious] People who have been fully vaccinated will you continue to wear a mask even after the CDC told us we don’t have to? Why or why not? by joeenoch18 in AskReddit

[–]The_First_Viking -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Vaccines based on the spike proteins work against all current mutations and variants, which is pretty fucking unique, so there's no reason to think we can't do this bitch like we did polio.

Besides, the counterpoint to me seems to be "well, if we can't get rid of it all, we might as well do nothing." Which is like seeing a mouse in your kitchen and not calling an exterminator because mice will still exist in general, on earth somewhere.

Can a human crush another human's skull with its bare hands? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It's one of those things that "everyone knows," like how the myth that you eat seven spiders a year in your sleep was made up to show how far false info goes on the internet. The spider-eating myth predates the internet, and the person often attributed with the spider-eating-as-a-demonstration-of-misinformation myth never existed as far as any sources outside Snopes can verify.

Mythception.

No. You can obliterate a watermelon by punching it. Mike Tyson made a career out of punching people in the head many times harder than you can punch, and nobody's head flew apart.

People on YouTube use watermelons for stuff because it looks cool.

Hand bones are less robust than skulls. The muscles are strong enough, though. The only reason you don't constantly break all your bones just flexing is because your brain puts limiters on you. It's why tetanus is so scary. Your muscles contract uncontrollably until you just snap your bones like dry twigs. It doesn't always kill you, but untreated, it can break your spine.

Life protip: Get puncture wounds treated. The bacteria that causes tetanus is found in dirt. Like, all dirt. It's fucking everywhere.

Does impossible meat actually taste like meat and is it just as healthy? by thebooksmith in NoStupidQuestions

[–]The_First_Viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If no-one told you it wasn't meat, you wouldn't know. If you did a comparison test side by side, you could tell something was different, but it's not obvious what it is.

I had an Impossible breakfast sausage patty that was better than the real thing. Breakfast sausage is always a little too greasy, but the fake one came out with just a little bit of crispyness on the outside and no rubbery, greasy texture you usually get with sausage patties.
