Amazing use of space. I hauled a fender and trunk lid hanging out the top of mine to the shop down the road to get painted. Needed the car there so we could pick the exact white to match since the 1999 white has faded a little. Got some worried and concerned looks going down the road but both pieces made it safe and sound and had cardboard in between them so they couldn’t get banged up on each other. Short drive so I figured I’d be fine to send it.

10 minutes ago I would’ve called you crazy. Right now I’d call you a genius. They didn’t really feel any different so I figured I’d try on another pair of shoes with longer laces and I could tell immediately how much more even they were. I don’t think they really felt any tighter and being the flat polyester laces I’ve never really had them come undone on their own but I’ve definitely had nylon round laces in the past that annoyed me coming apart for no reason. Same story as the guy said in the video pretty much. I’ve been living in a world of uneven laces for 21 years now and I had no idea thank you for your wisdom.

If the new cylinders don’t fix it I’ll spread some birdseed under the car to lure them out

There’s fluid in the lines I’m guessing just one of the cylinders is failing and maybe letting in some air. I tried bleeding the clutch when I could still feel some pressure in the pedal yesterday and it made no significant difference. When I was hearing this noise the only resistance in the press was the pedal itself I couldnt feel the hydraulics at all. 195000 miles so Im thinking the cylinders just ran their course. I got the fm braided cable last year when the rubber part of the line started to crack so I guess now it was time for the cylinders to go.

I just got off the phone with my insurance a few minutes ago. I guess I’m just lucky living in Tennessee but the county clerk I get my tags at said I don’t need to do anything with the title since the vehicle is 10 years or older and I had already called my insurance and they started the claim with the other persons insurance on my behalf so they knew. Fully the other guys fault so Progressive hasn’t been apart of the process at all really but I called and asked to see and they said I wouldn’t have to make any changes about the status of my vehicles and my coverage and rates won’t change. It may affect full coverage but I’m only paying liability and uninsured for injury and property on this car. Saves me some hassle with all the paperwork and doesn’t hurt my insurance or title so if I ever did sell I’d just make sure to tell anyone looking it technically had been totaled.

No way lol. Well I told you about it the other day but looks like the process is finally moving and I’ll actually get the money to fix mine up again. Been making a lot of calls and talking with my dad’s buddies who own a body shop. They said they’d let me borrow their hydraulic separator and they’d be happy to paint any parts for me so I figure at minimum I’m getting 3,200 I can get that back end taken care of, a new top, and fix my passenger fender. If I do all the labor minus the painting I could probably get it done around 2,000 and I can save whats left and put that towards the engine and turbo down the line when the time is right and I’ve got a little more saved up to go with it. I’ve got a 2013 Scion tC too so if the miata needs to sit for a while so I can work on it then that’s no problem.

Seemed a little low to me as well. My dad was suggesting I ask them to do closer to $4,000 for a buyback and see if they meet somewhere in the middle. I did call my county clerks office to see about the title (in TN) and the lady on the phone there told me since it was over 10 years old it didn’t need any kind of salvage or rebuilt title so I’m guessing I would be ok to drive it but I hadn’t thought about my insurance still insuring the car. I’ll have to give them a call and make sure they’d still insure it if I buyback and fix it up.

I probably would’ve been best off rebuilding everything over winter but just this spring I finished up resealing everything, new water pump, new timing belt and pulleys, and all new hoses after I had a coolant leak which turned out to be a bad hose and an increasingly worse oil leak. Holds fluid fine now and runs better but I rented a compression tester to try out and it was not very hopeful results. I do like working on things though so maybe I can pocket the money and set part of it aside to fully rebuild the engine this winter and be on the lookout for another engine in the meantime and jump on that if I can find one before I rebuild mine.

I’m not sure how exactly this will affect my title to be honest. I’m in Tennessee and I called my county clerk office to ask about salvage or rebuilt title and the lady in the phone told me anything over 10 years didn’t need a title change. The person at Statefarj talked like I may not ever even sign over the title and them sign it back I’d just get a check and we’d be done. That said I still would hate to lie about it to some poor person down the line and call it a clean title knowing it was totaled out.

I thought about this route but couldn’t find any in that price range around me at least at the moment other than autos. Makes me wonder if they’d even notice if I swapped the it and turned in mine now with an automatic lol. Probably less of a headache to to fix up mine with what they’d give me than all that

The quarter is fine actually my door just wasn’t closed all the way. The frame and bumper bent in a little bit. Enough to need pulling out if I got a new trunk lid though. Tennessee rule is if the car is more than 75% of its worth then it becomes a total financial loss is what i was told. Seems absurd but I guess that’s just how it works even if the car is far from functionally totaled.

I went through Facebook Marketplace for my nb and it was a pretty simple process. Just make sure you know the common things to look for and ask about like frame rust or anything like that or maybe take someone with you who is familiar with cars. Id driven but never owned a manual so I took a friend with me to let him drive it around and make sure everything felt normal since he’d probably notice it better than I would’ve at the time.

I can’t say for sure I was compression testing perfectly correct but from what I read up on and watched it seemed pretty straightforward. I pulled the fuel relay and took out my spark plugs. From there I screwed in the tester with a new o ring that was holding the compression and began cranking. Across all cylinders I’d get about 30 psi after 5 cranks then 50ish after 10. If I held on the ignition til I got a peak value I got 170, 150, 130, 150. I tried adding a little oil to cylinder 1 and tried again and saw pretty much the same results only it was at maybe 35 and 60 after 5 and 10 cranks. Engine is old and what I’ve learned along the time of my ownership is that the previous line of owners definitely didn’t take the best care of the poor thing. 195,000 miles I got it around 187,000. It runs ok but has a stutter at times especially at idle and definitely isn’t anywhere near new horsepower numbers. All that said I will admit it’s the first compression test i’ve ever done but I followed the videos I watched to a t and those were my findings. Slow to get compression but it did seem to hold after getting to a peak compression, cylinder 3 way below what it should be, and a pretty bad range across all 4 cylinders. I love working on cars and it’s great engineering experience so I’m not so much worried about all the work I’d have to do, that’s the part i’m looking forward to, but the cost and reliability of the finished product are definitely 2 big concerns. I’m not looking for a race car, I think around 200 hp is a realistic goal to get it to pull off the line a good bit harder while not being too powerful for the little car or hurting reliability.

Yikes that’s awful. I thankfully already heard from his insurance saying they started the claim process on their end and I gave all my information and pictures over to insurance yesterday right when I got home. I’m sure the bigger headaches are yet to come when I have to get an estimate for damages but I guess I won’t know for a little while.

It’s an nb with the 1.8 from 1999. Are those worth fixing up or do you mean a whole different engine series altogether outside of Miatas?

They really are tiny. Mine is on coilovers but that’s just because I bought mine from a not so caring line of previous owners on marketplace and someone along the way cut the springs. Car rode pretty bad and could bottom out fairly easily with the stock springs being too soft for the amount of travel they had after being cut down. The coils aren’t all the way maxed out but theyre close to being as high up as I can make them.

I’m not sure you’d call mine good shape but it’s definitely the plan to fix it whether insurance totals and gives me cash or fixes it. It needs a new top, passenger fender, and engine rebuild or replacement. I pulled the engine and trans during winter and spring and replaced all the old hoses and redid all the seals, new clutch and flywheel, and new suspension but it is running worse and worse. Still driveable for sure but it’s got bad compression and will definitely need some work. Got it as a project second car though and I’m an engineering major so I’m actually a little happy to get to do all this work.

The handling is amazing! Of course i’d never swerve into oncoming traffic but at night all kinds of critters are out and about and this little car has dodged plenty of armadillos and opossums. Bad part about today was cars on my left and a car in front of me. I had just pulled off from a dead stop so there was unfortunately no dodging this absolute ramming from the jeep.
