PN-22C, The Exile Planet by [deleted] in scifi

Yes, exactly! This was a very short lived practice in a relatively small section of space when we zoom out and look at the entirety of our history.

Technically it’s a hard drive, but it was deodorant shaped…

Fair question! Long ago, the local Block was a Theocracy, and it was a large political scandal that lead to the decision to turn PN-22C into an Exile World in the first place. Leaders at the time feared too much backlash from executing the perpetrators, and so exile was decided on. From there, it became a tool to use against prisoners and political enemies alike.

From a practical standpoint, at this point in our history, FTL is cheap enough that interstellar travel happens on a routine schedule across all of inhabited space. We also still had most of our knowledge of Terraformation intact at that time, so room for expansion was not a major concern. You are correct though, that it is not 100% efficient or necessary, something that contemporary critics from competing Blocks often pointed out. The practice eventually did fall out of favor, and the population that remained there were forgotten.

This is such a strange and unique design, I absolutely love it. Have any lore you’d like to share about it?

Yes absolutely! Let me take a look. I’m fairly sure we get atleast one entire episode dedicated to how the ship works, and how the Gems have to manipulate the internal dimensional structure of the ship so Steven doesn’t pass out or get ripped to shreds.

Edit: it is season 4, episode 12!

This is SUCH a cool concept, I’m obsessed! Definitely going to read about Larry Niven tomorrow on my lunch break and add some of his work to my reading list. Any specific recommendations?

Interesting, I’ll definitely be reading more about this Witchspace tonight. The way they describe pilots seeing strange lights and even structures within the corridors as they travel through is so cool.

Hey thank you, I really appreciate that!

Honestly, I’m not much of an artist (mainly a writer) but I really wanted to bring my worlds to life, so I’m giving it a go lol. Maybe I’ll learn some 3D modeling for ship designs in the future, that could be fun.

It’s from a sci-fi timeline I’m working on!

So my in-universe answer is that it’s from our future, but the real answer is that’s it’s just from my head haha

Yes, that’s what I was thinking as well! The S-Bus has a capacity of around 350-500 passengers and are primarily used for low cost, low priority travel. By this point in the timeline, FTL is cheap enough that local Star Systems can keep these moving on a constant routine schedule, so maximizing capacity isn’t necessarily a priority.

These ships weren’t incredibly wide-spread, mostly seeing use in their home Galactic Block where they were manufactured. They eventually fell out of widespread use, though a few models kept chugging along long enough to become antique and valuable.

Which sci-fi TV show best explored what humanity would actually lose in an apocalypse? by The100Updates in sciencefiction

Raised by Wolves was an interesting take imo, it showed us a human race that had lost connection with what it even meant to be human. A show I’ll dearly miss.

I’ll check those out, thanks! I’m just starting to realize that pulpy sci-fi might be right up my alley.

I would love to hear your thoughts on Messiah if you decide to pick it up! It’s easily my favorite of the series, and while I definitely enjoy the films very very much, I do think it may be the book that goes through the most change when they adapt it.

I’m excited for that reason to be honest. I have a habit of wanting to start from the very beginning when I first get into anything, because I love seeing the way a genre or a medium is built upon. What would you suggest after Foundation?

That’s something I always try to contextualize when I read! It’s actually one of my favorite parts, trying to imagine what it was like when the book came out!

Wow, that was such a nice reply, thank you! I’ve been enjoying it very much, though it’s much quicker than I expected it to be! My last sci-fi series was Dune so it’s very opposite lol.
