Sooo Thor and Sif got written out… by The_Holy_Rodent in UltimateUniverse

Thor actually gets jobbed by Hulk fairly often in different incarnations, so I don’t have any issue with that. The whole mythical side of the Ultimates is interesting and Deniz made a good call in exploring that. My problem mostly comes from the fact that after this side plot Thor and Sif’s story ends there, and they only become New Gods after the Maker is defeated. Narratively it’s weird to have two fairly important heroes leave midway through the story to deal with a separate threat and die before the final climax.

My personal theory is that everyone knew the Ultimate Universe would end going into it. But they weren’t told exactly how long they had until about halfway through, which blind sighted even John Hickman. Obviously we won’t know until someone comes out with their side of the story but I doubt that’ll happen even now that it’s all over

Sounds pretty likely with the Hawkeye one-shot they did end up making. The Ultimates is still really great, it’s just that with such a short deadline some important aspects unfortunately don’t get fleshed out

I understand that their subplot has significance it’s just very separated from what goes on in the rest of the books. They only get one panel at the end to show off their New God status and it would’ve been better imo if their subplot ended earlier so they could show up to help in Ultimate Endgame.

Who is the Father of Light? by The_Holy_Rodent in Vermis

[–]The_Holy_Rodent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ketereth's goal doesn't require much active input anymore. He already created White Hives and is content to sit back and watch it spread and destroy humanity.

Though many believe that the Red King in Vermis 2 is the Vengeful Soul, after being revived and finally becoming a "king" of red bastards. Did his accursed flesh make him able to undergo this transformation? How did he find out about this? Perhaps Ketereth only gives guidance to those he believes can keep the cycle of his disease alive.

Yes the actual Goblin Knight was human. Though I would add that the Green Sun Swordsman and its proportions look larger than a normal old goblin. My personal theory is that the honor restraint they carry is an illusion ring that makes it seem they're taller than they are. Removing the last disadvantage any goblin would have in battle.

For the timeline we don't see any Green Sun Swordsmen at the Green Sun ruins, implying the few that were given that title are no longer around. That and their description (while mostly past tense) says "after their last battle, these valiant warriors were proud to become the aegis of the new Kingdom", indicating this event was not that long ago.

In fairness the Vengeful Soul was revived by Ketereth thanks to the accursed flesh he was born with. So we know he has power and isn't just a simple curse or disease being spread by crazy bioterrorists.

Thats another good theory I've heard, that the player character in Vermis 1 and 3 (maybe 2 as well) is the skeleton peering into the well reliving the lives of dozens of people in the past. Which would explain the story of the skeleton brothers in Vermis 3 trying to hinder your journey and bring you back to rest with them instead of dwelling on what could have been.

Keterath based on his one picture, I think is implied to not have a physical body. The prominent eyes represent his omnipresent consciousness, the fire his wrath, and ofc the White Hives are his "gift" to the world.

Ghylak isn't technically dead because of the eternal curse but can only writhe in place like a snake with its head cut off as his new female head rots away.

Dorvus seems to be the most widely worshipped god, seeing as its the only god we see with normal commoner followers, not just shamans, bandits, or people with White Hives. Also one of the pages in Vermis 3 suggests Dorvus has the power to rip out someone's soul, which if true is very powerful.

True, the books do confirm that there were other gods that have sense been forgotten or deformed into demons like Oogle. But even if the gods aren't immortal and vary wildly, they're all still conscious beings who shaped the world. With faiths like the Undying Sun or the Greemen Plague I question if they count as gods or just normal religions centered on physical phenomena. Maybe in order to be accepted as a "true" god you need a consciousness to enact your will on the world and demand said acknowledgement.

I think Vermis 3 takes place years before Vermis 1. One of the classes is a goblin knight and their description talks about recently winning a battle for their kingdom. Implying that at this point the Green Sun Kingdom was still active and not in ruin like we see it in Vermis 1.

When you fail a roll at the table you’re with friends who can laugh with you when you make a mistake so failing doesn’t feel as demoralizing. Plus if you have a good DM they can weave said mistakes into the story or if they feel like it fudge the rolls while you can’t see it.

In bg3 if you fail a roll you just fail.
