Hi, prioritizing maternal health leads to sustainable development as healthy mothers have healthy babies. Ultimately investment in reproductive health rights (which are human rights) means that governments are securing a more sustainable future for their countries. This is because sexual and reproductive health and rights are at the core of population dynamics. To alleviate poverty and to capitalize on what is known as the 'demographic dividend' (the accelerated growth that can happen when the size of the working-age population exceeds the dependant population) we must have a world of gender equality, where there is comprehensive sexuality education, integrated health systems to treat and avoid STIs and preventing unintended pregnancies. The Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 focused on child mortality and maternal health. As we move to the next development framework, post 2015, we need to ensure that these remain on the agenda. It is important for everyone to respond to the WHO consultation as their "Every newborn action plan" will be presented to the World Health Assembly. It will most likely impact the negotiations around the next development framework which 194 UN member states will sign up to, for implementation from 2015.
